Hi my name is Heather and this is my first time posting so I would like to thank anyone for their advice. I'm looking for a female yorkie on the small size and I don't care about the price. I just want her to be healthy. I have a 4 month old yorkie boy and I want him to have a friend. I'm not looking to breed because my baby will be neutered in a month. I'm looking for a breeder in or around Houston, TX. I can't get another puppy from the people I got my baby from because I realized they aren't breeders, they are brokers. I was naive and forgot to ask to see the parents. My mind went blank when I saw the puppies, they were too cute. I'm just thankful my baby is healthy and happy.

The Reliant Dog Show is next month. You could attend and talk to some breeders there.

There is no way to guarantee size. A reputable breeder will have an idea about a size range, but will be honest with you that it cannot be guaranteed. If you are set on a smaller size, an older pup might be what you need because it will be apparent at that point where they will end up as an adult.

That's where it can be really helpful to have contact with show breeders. They will not breed a female that is under 5 lbs. Sometimes they have high quality pups that they hold back with the intent of bringing them into the show ring, championing them, and then using them in their breeding program. In the case of some females, it becomes apparent that they are not going to reach 5 lbs., the show breeder will let them go to a pet home.

These tend to be really great dogs ... I've had one. They're under a year of age, but since they were very young they've been worked with in preparation for the show ring. They're accustomed to being handled and examined, groomed, having their topknot fixed, walking on a leash, etc. They can even be well housebroken and spayed.

Thanks for the suggestion about the dog show. If I can't find a breeder I will probably go. I never thought about an older dog but that might be the best option because my little boy hates grooming. And I will want to put cute hair accessories on my girl.

I really wouldn't consider the pups I suggested as "older dogs." They are usually around 9 months old, still very much a puppy. It's just at that point, an experienced breeder will have a very good idea that they are going to be on the smaller side, which you said was important to you.

By older dogs I just meant older than my dog. I was only looking at 10-12 week old dogs and now I am looking at all available. My dog is only 4 months old and really small right now but that could change. My vet estimates he will weigh about 5 lbs. I was just trying to look for a girl about that same weight but if I find a dog that I love I wouldn't care if she was on the bigger size. Because all yorkies are small dogs.
