I posted this in the general forum but curious to what breeders and handlers think...

I just want to start by saying I am not trying to pry and I am just curious. I am thinking about getting a puppy to show and the price seems perfect (for a pup with champion lines). It is through an acquaintance, who is becoming one of my yorkie guru's. Anyways she would sell him to me for $1500. I am just curious as to what others have paid- he is smaller and AKC with his dad working on his CH and his grandpa is CH. I have only paid up to $500 for my girl, but she is in no way standard nor does she have papers so showing is out of the question. Just curious- please dont take offense for me asking just trying to make a decision...

I believe the going rate for pet males is around $1500 from reputable breeders. I would say that depending on his conformation and pedigree this might be a nice show prospect.

If you are serious about getting into the show world price would probably be pretty low on my list of concerns.

Can you work a deal with the breeder? Say for example pay the $1500 and if he doesnt turn out you can return him to the breeder to pet out and either get a refund or a different puppy?

I think that's very reasonable. I paid over $2000 for Zoe. She's champion sired.

If you don't mind me asking, how old is he now and what is his adult weight expected to be? I think $1500 is a reasonable price for a show prospect. It is always risky buying a young puppy. It takes a lot to make a show dog, so many things have to come together. Of course for that price I am sure the breeder is not guaranteeing him to be show quality.

You haven't mentioned the age of this puppy. An actual show dog is usually not sold as a show dog until closer to a year old.
Champion sired or champions in the pedigree does not in any way assure anyone that the puppy is a show dog. Many times I have had a show dog in a litter but the other siblings are not show dogs, they are pet quality. Sometimes I can figure it out sooner rather than later. In some cases, it wasn't until the puppy was more than six months before it was evident it was not maturing into a show quality, so it would be spayed or neutered and sold for pet. Pups in the litter that are pet quality are exaclty the same pedigree as the one that is the show dog.

For that price, it is a pet price. if you are buying what you think is a show prospect most of the time if under 6 or 7 months, they do not turn out to be show quality. Champion sired or champions in the pedigree does not guarantee a show dog.

What Lorraine said!! Also, how many champions has the champion sire produced? Are there champions up close(within the 2nd generation) on both sides of the pedigree. Is the puppy line bred or an outcross? Remember you cant breed a pedigree only. Even if every single dog on the pedigree were a champion it can not guarantee that any offspring will be show quality. Is the breeder of the puppy a "died in the wool" exhibitor that has produces many champions? Just things to think about. Best of luck.
