| [News] Unmuzzled greyhound mauled pet to death A DOG owner has spoken of the distress of seeing his tiny Yorkshire Terrier mauled to death by a greyhound. Stephen Brodie, of Brampton, was walking Penny, which he and his wife Doris had had for seven years, when the attack happened at Lambley, near Halton Lea Gate, on Friday afternoon. After about two-and-a-half miles they passed the greyhound and its owner and noticed it had a muzzle. But as they turned to head back, they encountered the dog a second time ? this time without its muzzle. The greyhound?s elderly owner started to replace it but, as Penny walked past, it broke free. Within seconds the greyhound dug its teeth into her neck and snatched her off the ground. Stephen, 55, desperately tried to get to Penny while the greyhound?s owner tried to get his dog off her. He said: ?The dog had her by the neck and was shaking her like a rag doll. ?She was left shaking on the floor and the back of her neck was cut open. ?I picked her up and there was blood everywhere. She didn?t stand a chance. I just looked at him and said you?ve killed my dog.? The greyhound owner?s car was nearby and he eventually agreed to drive Stephen to his car so he could get Penny to the nearest vet. But as he lifted the little dog into his own vehicle, he knew she had died. Stephen rang Doris, who was babysitting for some of her grandchildren back in Brampton, and broke the news. He picked her up and they took Penny?s body a vet. The heartbroken couple have contacted police about the attack and are warning other dog owners to beware when out walking their pets. The greyhound?s owners have been in touch since the incident to apologise after Stephen left his details, but he remains angry that the dog was ever off its muzzle in a public place. He said: ?I just can?t understand it. The dog must have had a muzzle for a reason, so why take it off? It?s quite a quiet route but they had already passed me and there were other people walking dogs. Penny didn?t stand a chance.? Doris, 60, had to ring each of her nine grandchildren and break the tragic news. ?She was our baby and we don?t know what to do without her. I just can?t sleep for thinking about her,? she added. ?We just want to warn other people to be careful or it could do it again to another little dog.? http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/vi...4&imageindex=1 |

| How heartbreaking... I think I should copy this article and give to it the people who are nasty when we pick Punkin up to protect her from their greyhound (and other large dogs we are not familiar with.)

| I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't image how you felt while that was going on. There sure was a reason why that Greyhound had a mussle on in the lst place. Rest in Peace dear little Penny Rudy & his mom (Dawn) |

| Prayers & Hugs for Penny's Mum & Dad I am saddened to hear of your tremendous loss.We are just new Yorkie Parents but not new dog owners. We have always been mindful when out with our dogs to make sure we are incontrol and aware of others dogs, kids, adults who may not be dog savvy or fearful etc. I agree with you that if the elderly dog owner had a muzzle on prior it never should have come off! I could not imagine what you are going thru ,after only having our wee Rosie for two week if this were to happen, let alone 7 years . Please know that we are here to talk to , vent and greave. Lots of love being sent your way to wrap you in during this sad sad time. Suellen & Victor of Maple Ridge, BC,Canada

| This is the reason my head is on a swivel when we are out walking. I don't want us to become statistics.

| That is so sad. I agree with the owner. Why did the guy take the muzzle off in the first place. |

| I have a rescue Greyhound who fortunately has never been a problem...But, he was introduced to Fancy in the home and was never left alone with her. I was advised by the rescue people that ALL Greyhound owners should have a muzzle, just to be on the safe side. They are sight hounds and a fuzzy little Yorkie, can easily be mistaken for "game", especially out of doors. I am so sorry for their loss and the Greyhound owner certainly holds responsibility for the attack. My poor Greyhound Gus is so timid, he's afraid of his own shadow.

| This breaks my heart, not only for the Yorkie but for the Greyhound as well. I too have a rescued Greyhound and he has no prey drive at all and is as sweet as can be. I hate it when something like this happens because it gives such a bad name to the breed and we are so desperate to find homes for these retired racers. It just kills me. My heart is broken for all involved. |

| Yep...I can see this. My friends have a retired greyhound girl...she got out ahead of her hubby and shot across the raod and snatched up the neighbors cat...they had to go to court of it. Retired greyhounds are used to chasing that little rabbit...she says that is the only explanation she could think of. Small animals are like that rabbit. How tragic. RIP sweet baby.

| Such a sad tragic story but could have been prevented! Why remove the muzzle? A life lost because of it. The word sorry just dosen't do it in this case. Carol & Buddy |

| That is awful. A few years ago my aunts "Teddy" (yorkie) was mauled by a neighbor dog in my aunts yard. So sad.

| I have worked with animals for 10 years now and i too saw a greyhound maul a medium sized dog. I broke up the mauling which left the dog in shock and the greyhound with a "out of it" look almost like it didn't realize what just happened. The other dog slowly recovered but i had nightmares of the mauling for weeks. Everythime i closed my eyes i would just see the dog being shaked. This is the greyhound way and needs to be only with owners who realize this. Keeping a muzzle on is the smartest thing to do when other "game " is around. By the way, this greyhound also lived with a small dog and never had a problem. I guess when the atmosphere is right their instints come alive. I am not a sue happy person but you need to make the owners of the greyhound accountable. |
