| environmental allergies I'm (almost) completely convinced that Latte's allergies are environmental. Does anyone else have this conviction? The leg chewing and paw licking are really bad right now. She also scratches her armpits and neck. I give her Baby Benedryl at night to sleep, but is there anything else anyone's tried? I'm considering trying another vet to get some new ideas. I have NOT resorted to prednisone again, that's for sure! Any thoughts? |

| I've also found that people shampoo and conditioners make them itch like crazy, so I'm sticking to both Dr. Bronner's liquid castile soap for sensitive skin and the #1All Systems shampoo & conditioner. |

| Gracie has been on allergen shots for 3 years now. They have been a blessing for her.

| Do you wipe her paws and hiney when she comes inside? Get some hypoallergenic baby wipes and see if that helps with the feet biting. When sensitive to environmental things, also make sure you are using non-toxic cleaning products.

| wipes I'll try the wipes. I know we've got some around here. I also use a good shampoo that is for itchy skin. And I only use the benedryl before bed-it halps us both to sleep easy. Thanks for all the suggestions! |

| Yea, my baby boy has enviromental allergies. we took him to the vet about a month ago for that and the vet scrap some of his skin off his paws and checked it. she said he's getting to the age where he's starting to react to the environment. (he's 9 mts now). she suggested we wipe his paws with baby wipes about 2 - 3 times a day. and it really helps! but he still licks his paw every now and then. try the baby wipes, it might help. |

| I have the same problems.... Quote:
I have 3 yorkies, Jenny Jo my oldest(10 years old) is on predisone and it does help some but she still licks, in fact she has licked the hair right off her paws. I have tried everything. The baby of the bunch is (6 months old Bella) and she is starting with rubbing her face on the carpet and getting her eyes tore up and the scratching. So I know exactly how you feel My other Yorkie Maya has no problems what so ever ~Barbara~ | |

| My vet says Otis has Hayfever. He is on hydroxyzine twice daily. His eyes are very watery and they itch him. He licks his paws and the everything else, especially bed sheets and my legs. I too am excited for fall and winter. My poor boy, he just blinks and blinks. He is 3 and this is the first year he's had them. My vet said they tend to get worse as he gets older. I asked if keeping him inside would help and she said NO. Good Luck. He's also on holistic select duck and oatmeal mixed with nutro natural balance venison and brown rice for allergies and sensitive tummies.

| Ginger's allergy battle I feel for you. Ginger battles allergies, and while she's allergic to several foods (we've had her tested) her environmental allergy list is long as well. She's not only allergice to several types of grass, weed and mold, she's allergic to her brother the cat. Anyway, I have found bathing her with a mild soap (I use aveeno baby bath), vacuuming frequently, wiping her paws when we come in (even rinsing them in the sink) and Occasional oatmeal baths soothe her itchy/sore skin. I also use an herbal flea shampoo that doesn't seem to irritate her as much as other regular "dog" shampoos (I've decided against using chemical flea repellent on my dogs). A high quality diet helps too. Even with all that, we still use the occasional benedryl...and in the spring I've succumbed to letting the vet prescribe a steroid (I know, I shouldn't, but she was SO miserable) A friend of mine swears by her air purifier...I haven't invested in one yet...but that may help too. Good luck and keep us posted!

| Wow. I had no idea that allergies got so bad for animals to require prednisone or frequent doses of Benedryl. Sorry to heart that. It seems that Bodhi is bothered by allergens a bit here too. What kind of herbal flea shampoo do you use Gingergirlsmom? Sounds like what I'd like to alternate with his oatmeal shampoo. As far as the air purifier goes ... I'd like to hear other peoples' experiences with it. I haven't taken the time for internet research about it, but would like to know if it makes one more sensitive to air outside the home. I agree with the frequent vacuums (without carpet powders, of course) & the sensitive cleaners. Yay for HEPA vacs! |
