| how does this homecooked recipe sound? hi everyone, how does this sound to give our yorkies? this is what i make sammy about every month and a half. i make a largeamount and freeze it in containers. he loves this recipe and gobbles it down everytime. i have been homecooking since the food scare. 1 lb ground turkey 1lb ground beef 1 sweet potato-steamed 1 cup lentils-boiled 1 cup brown rice -boiled 2 cups oatmeal 1/2 cup flax seed 1/2 cup oat bran 1/2 lb peas 2 stalks of celery-chopped 1 bag of small baby carrots-steamed 4 cups of chicken broth-sodium free 4 cups of water i mixed this all together, then separated it in containers , which would last me about a week. then i added in each one ,a different flavor, i used peanut butter in one, applesauce in another ,pecorino romano cheese in another. so this way sammy gets a different flavor every week. i also add missing link with each meal, 2x a day , and he gets 1/2 super vitachew, with each meal. my question is, do you think this if up to standards with nutritional value ? i would like to start giving him cosequin for his legs and joints and also give him grizzleys salmon oil. do you think this is too much for a 6 lb yorkie? any help is greatly appreciated . thank you |

i would say YES to the salmon oil ( i just went and got Layla some yesterday!) but i'd go VERY slow adding new suppliements... i went too fast a few weeks ago and it upset her tummy!!! I also think that sould last you longer than a week....??? how much do you feed a day??? i try and make enough so it will last a month.. but if you have the time to cook each week.. great!! the fresher the better! | |

I would simplify it a bit, if it were me - for the same reasons Marci mentions above - and for your own learning curve. Btw, I think I want to eat at your house! Are you supplementing too, then? Bc calcium and other things will be needed...

| I agree with the others, but I must say it sounds good enough to eat myself. If you ever have leftovers just send them to my house. LOL

| Wow, impressive menu! I agree on the grains front, personally I prefer completely grain free. With the veggies, they are better raw than cooked, imo the best thing to do is to put raw fruit and veg in a food mixer and puree it, they can process it better that way as its like it would be in their preys stomach. I make a batch once a month and freeze it in portions. Salmon oil is great, remember that when supplementing with oils you should also give vitamin e because their bodies use heaps of it to process the oil. I also agree that you definitely need to supplement with calcium, as mine are on raw (with cooked meat as treats) they eat raw meaty bones every day so thats where they get their calcium but if you are not feeding consumable raw bones then bone meal will give them their calcium

| It looks yummy, but you could simplify it quite a bit if you wanted to It seems like it's missing calcium which you can get from either bonemeal or from egg shells. Just take the eggshells and stick them in the oven at 350 for 10 minutes then take them out and grind them into a fine powder...You will have to google to find out how much to add per pound of food or whatever it is. Also, like lara suggested, when you give fish oils, you need to supplement with Vitamin E. Good luck! It sounds like you're doing a great job!

| Theres no need to give missing link if you are giving salmon oil, and vise versa. I prefer salmon oil. Yes you should give vitamin e if you are giving any type of FBO. The bonemeal would be a higher quantity and quality of calcium than what is in the vita chews. However when you cook meat you lose alot of the vitamins in it so if you are feeding cooked meat then you will still need to be giving some sort of multi vitamin, however be careful not to overdose him on the vitamins, especially vit a. You might also want to look into some sort of powder supplement that contains alfalfa, garlic, flax seed etc. Its not essential but many dogs do benefit from it. The most important thing is to know your dog, the health of your dog is your biggest key to wether or not you are giving them the correct diet.

| I'm not sure if this info is correct but my vet suggested 60% protein 20% carb 20% veggie for home cooking for Brandi |

| I agree, there's no need to give fish oil AND missing link....Vitamin E should be added to the diet, and if I were you, I would add veggies like carrots that contain betacarotene (good form of vit A) instead of giving a vitamin that contains vitamine A...It is possible to OD on vit A which can be very bad for their bodies, but they won't OD off of betacarotene (vit a in food form)...

| i was just reading something somewhere yesterday that said it is better to stick to purchased pet foods than to homecook unless you are a pet nutritionist because the puchased foods are made of just the right amounts of every mineral, vitamin and etc our pets need per serving while it is hard to know about that with homecooked. |

| Just use regular human vitamin E and you can buy Solid Gold bonemeal at www.solidgoldhealth.com but you have to do some research to find out how much bonemeal you should be giving...That's really important.

| ok thanks alot. i will read the solid gold bonemeal package and find out about how much to give him. i will buy human vitamin e oil , but again i am not sure about the dosage for 6 lbs. when i run out of the missing link i will get him grizzley salmon oil. i will not give him both. i will continue to give him the super vitachew vitamins, unless you can recommend another good vitamin. the only thing i need help on is can i give him cosequin for his leg, and knee caps? he seems very healthy , very energenic and his coat is thick. i want to thank you very much for all your help. i really appreciate it |
