| Low protien food??? Riley has been eating eukanuba for yorkies and I recently adopted Lily who is on Royal Canine. I want them to eat the same food, but I don't want to get either of those brands again (I don't trust them). I was thinking about getting Artemis. The thing is, Riley has MVD and while the vet said I don't need to worry too much about his food until (if and when) he shows signs, I still want something with not too much protein. Artemis has 23%, which is less than a lot of ones I saw. Actually, the small breed food has more so I was gonna get the regular kind, but I don't know if it'll be too big. And then someone at work told me that wet food is better for dogs than kibble, which I really don't agree with, but she was adamant. I know wet food does have less protein. Anyways, I don't know what to get for them now. I just don't trust any of the major companies anymore, but last time I tried cooking for Riley he got sick because of his MVD. Any advice??

| food I have never had a problem with Eukanuba. I have used it for 20 years. But, have you checked out Blue Buffalo?? I think it has a lower protein. Also, Bil-Jac and Pro-Plan Selects do too. I dont agree with the canned only. It does have less protein and I use it with the dry. Just a thought, Lynn |

No Longer a Member | I don't have any suggestions for you as far as those foods are concerned. But I do want to point out that the protein percentage you're seeing on canned food is on a different scale than dry food. The reason is, that a large portion of the weight in canned food is water, so the protein counts are different. So, if you're looking at a kibble that has 28% protein, and you see a particular canned food is 9% protein, you can't compare the two because the canned is a lot of water. Somewhere on the internet is a place that will convert the amounts for canned food for you so that you're comparing apples to apples, but I don't know where that is. Maybe someone here knows. |

| Canned food does NOT have less protein. In fact, it is much higher. In order to know how much protein is actually in a wet food, you have to convert the wet food to a dry matter basis....So, if you have a wet food that says it has 8% protein and let's say the moisture is 80%...Then you take 8 (the amt of protein) divided by 20 (the reciprocal of the moisture) = .40 = 40% protein on a dry matter basis.. So that food that you think is only 8% is actually 40% protein... Please join: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/L...d_MVD_Support/ All of the people on this group have dogs with either liver shunt or MVD. They will have a ton of different food suggestions for you.. A couple that I know of that are supposed to be safe for dogs with MVD are Avoderm Vegetarian and Natural Balance Vegetarian...But you will get many more suggestions on the group... Also, this group has a TON of information on liver shunt and MVD in their FILES section. It would be very beneficial for you and your doggie if you join this group

| Thanks for the tips on the canned food...I had no idea it was so high in protein. I have nothing against Eukanuba, it's just that I saw one of their products on the recall list so it freaked me out. I'm gonna check into the Avoderm. I joined the yahoo groups a long time ago, but never really got into the whole mass e-mail thing. It always kinda confused me. Whenever I go on there to look for some food suggestions I'm always at work so I never have time to really find what I'm looking for. I'm gonna go on there tonight and take my time. Thanks guys.

| I looked at Avoderm and saw the vegetarian kind. It didn't look too tasty to me, but I heard dogs like it. Yorkieluv, you weren't kidding about the Files section. Thanks! I can't believe I never actually went to the Web site. I always just got the e-mails. But the Files addressed everything I've ever been concerned about. I also sent out a post and am curious to see what kind of response I get. Thanks again.
