| Prayers here for all of you that you will get through this and learn to cope. So sorry to hear she has diabetes. Does it run in your family?

| You most definitely have my thoughts and prayers...I know it must be very difficult. Right now you are probably asking why??? But the only answer is why not. My husband is an insulin dependent diabetic...I know it'll be hard for her but not impossible. This is one disorder that can be controlled, and if you and she do a good job controlling it, there is no reason for it to control her. Mikayla will be okay...just understand what is necessary to make her feel well. Be confident...she needs your strength, so that she will be able to control this and lead a very normal life. Tight control, to regulate her blood sugar is vital...but the very tight restrictions are not as important as they once were. My husband has been a type I insulin dependent diabetic for over 30 years...he still works hard every day, has none of the complications associated with DM I, he takes insulin injections twice daily and checks his glucose 4 times daily. Overall he is healthier then I am. The key to it is to control it so it does not control you. That is my best advise. I know 7 years old is so very young to understand the importance of strict control, but she will become a master at it...trust me, kids are smarter and stronger then we give them credit for...she can do this and you can help, just be supportive, teach her now...so she can enjoy her life without complications. Hugs to you both...it will be okay...modern medicine has advanced so much, take advantage of the information and the knowledge available. I'll be hoping and pulling for her...she can do this...and do this well.

| You have my thoughts and prayers! I know it can be scary. My mom is a type 2 insulin diabetic. She takes 8 shots a day. Her sugar can be so high that her machine doesn't even read it. I remember when I went to have my son she hadn't had her shot and her sugar was 600. I was so scared for her. Once she gets regulated with her insulin it will all be okay.

| My thoughts are with your family. I'm type 2 using oral meds, but did insulin while I was pregnant. It is a controllable condition, but I know that fact may not help much now. One thing I can suggest is to see if there is a local support group. Just knowing you are not alone is a help. Any tips or ideas that other patients or parents of patients can give you might be comforting. I went through several stages of emotions after being diagnosed, from being mad to denial to acceptance and back again. Your daughter may or may not experience that, and you may do the same. Support during these times might be just what you need! Just know that you can do this!! And a good endocrinologist is a must! Find a doctor that you and your daughter feel comfortable with. This is a life-changing experience for you all, and it's the start of a long journey. Please PM me if you would like to vent, cry or celebrate a milestone on that journey. Carla |
