| oily...and unsafe ????? Ok...I found a flea in my daughters room and noticed that maggie was itchy. i thought it was because of her recent hair cut or maybe her bath...didn't get the shampoo out completely or something. i just checked her and found 2 fleas on her!!!! so i immediately got in the cupboard and got out the flea drops and put them on her. then i did a google search for biospot because i was wondering how long i should leave it before a bath...because it leaves this oily streak down her back. well, i found TONS of sites saying that biospot is bad and can cause seizures and such. so i searched it on here and everyone was saying the same thing. I IMMEDIATELY washed it off of maggie using dawn dish soap, deep conditioned her hair, rinsed, and put some leave in conditioner "horse stuff" on her hair and now she is running mad around the house like she always does after a bath. so i assume the few minutes she had the biospot on didn't hurt her...(of course i won't sleep a wink worrying about it all night). anyway, this brings me to the title of the post...I know there are a few highly recommended flea treatments but are they all the kinds that you have to put all the way down their back? i mean...I want it to be effective but with these guys with long hair...that is horrible. first of all, i don't like the greasy streak down the back. second of all, what if the lick it? won't it make them sick..or worse?? i mean, it is a pesticide...and they can reach to lick their butts and parts of their back. so why is it that you have to put this oily streak down their back? i just don't see how it makes sense. but i am not finding one that is just something you "spot" on their necks or something. maybe i am looking in the wrong place???

| My mom bought Biospot about a month ago for her yorkie because a petsmart employee recommended it. Rylie had a really bad allergic reaction to it. He itched and itched and gave himself a hot spot. My mom had to take him to the vet a couple days after putting it on and again a couple days later because he was still having such a bad reaction to it. I would only trust products that a vet reccomends and sells - not something you can just buy in any petstore. I have used Advantage and Frontline before and it tells you to put the liquid in between the shoulder blades. For cats it says to put it high up on the back of the neck. This is because you don't want the animal to be able to turn their head around and lick the liquid. I've never heard of putting it all the way down the back before except on a big dog where sometimes i've heard to put most of it on the neck and a little bit further down.

| Just about all the store brand flea and tick meds are hazardous to our babies, hartz and biospot being the top two. When I put their flea medicine on it goes between the shoulder blades, one spot so it isn't down their whole back. There is a more natural approach you can take which I am looking into myself. You can give them some doggy garlic treats that help repel fleas and other bugs. Washing them in dawn dish soap every time will kill all the current fleas, just remember to use a good conditioner so you don't dry out the skin. Here is a good site to check out. http://www.healthyfoodforpets.com/FleaFree.html Some more... http://www.lacetoleather.com/safefleacure.html http://www.healthyhappydogs.com/NaturalFleaTreatment http://www.naturespet.net/flea.html

| thanks for the info. i will start to give her garlic...i have heard this before too. i had a groomer once tell me she washed dogs in dawn...i thought it was INSANE. but i guess this must be why. i have read over and over again (by doing a search on here for "fleas") that dawn kills them. i had no idea. well, i washed maggie in dawn last night after putting the stuff on her and realizing it was BAD. i rinsed her extremely well and then put lots of conditioner on her. she is itching like crazy this morning. I will rinse her again really well and put some natural conditioner on her to see if that helps any. maybe it is the leave-in stuff that is itching her. it has never bothered her before but maybe a combo of all of the stuff was just too much. poor baby. i hate fleas. they are so annoying!!!!!!!!!! but it seems impossible to avoid. i have only dealt with them once before and i swore i would never do it again. but here i am...i just itch at the thought of it.

| I know what you mean I have been dealing with fleas the past few weeks. Just a couple here and there. I have been using frontline, capstar and dawn. I just ordered my gallon of minksheen too. I have been vacuuming and washing everything and I still find a flea. Because I have birds I really can't treat the house, but the vet said to keep vaccuuming and using the frontline and capstar. I haven't found any fleas in the house just the pets so I don't think its that bad. Good luck to you |

| The recipe I use when I cook for Lillybelle calls for a tsp of chopped garlic (for a weeks worth of food) havent seen a single flea or tick this year. Havent had to use Advantix one time this year either. Just a thought. |
