Okay, you can laugh...everyone in my house is! I don't cook very well. Okay, I am a...uhumm...challenged chef. I have a real mess here and would appreciate some advice. With all the best intentions in the world, I tried making some carob chip/peanut butter cookies for my yorkie. Great! How hard can it be?

Well, they are coming out uncooked on top and BURNED on the bottom. It's like the carob chips are burning. Here's my question...are there different kinds of carob chips? One for baking and one for...well, not baking??

my carob chips don't melt and my pb carob chip cookies bake in the oven for over an hour. carob has a much higher melting point than chocolate so it is not supposed to melt as easily as chocolate. I use unsweetened carob chips. what are the ingredients in your carob chips? and what temp are you using to bake your cookies? the temp might be too high if they are burning at bottom and raw inside...

These were the only carob chips I could find in Waco. They are from the super HEB health food section.

Carob chips malt sweetened (Sunridge Farms)

The temp is 375 degrees.

Do you sell plain carob chips on your site? I saw your cookies and they look wonderful! I plan to order some next payday. (Just thought I could make my own until then...

)

i don't sell the carob chips on my site but I do have to order them online because the unsweetened ones aren't available here in bulk--even in the organic food store.

try lowering your temp to 325 and raise your cookie sheet to the highest level that it will go in your oven to keep the cookies farther away from the heating elements. Place it at the broiler level but don't turn on the broiler. Also, use parchment paper on your cookie sheet--prevents sticking--not just with dog treats but with all cookies if you ever decide to start baking for your family. How long does the recipe say to bake them? Check on them every 10-15 minutes until they are done.

forgot to add--don't be so hard on yourself. I applaud your attempts to bake cookies for your pooches. baking--even if you are baking for your family--is much more difficult than cooking. baking is an EXACT science...often times, if you make the slightest change, whether it's intentional or not, the cookies, cake, brownies, etc will flop, which is why exact measurements are necessary when baking. when cooking, you can add things for taste and experiment, and still have a very positive outcome. I actually LOVE to bake and cook, but I prefer baking, which is how I became interested in formulating recipes and baking dog treats. You should see the array of cookies I bake for family and friends during the holidays

sorry for the difficulties with the carob....not much help here...but I do think your baby will still love them no matter how they look!

Thank you for the advice and the encouragement, but I think I will be ordering the cookies from YOU from now on. The ingredients alone set me back more than if I had just placed an order! Well, live and learn!

I have the new batch in now, so we'll see how it goes! (fingers crossed)

Your oven is baking too hot. Get a oven thermometer and test it out before calling in a repairman.

I have a recipe for a carob cake with carob cream cheese frosting if you would like that. It calls for the carob powder instead of carob chips.

I don't know about where you live but carob powder was almost as difficulty to find as the chips. Only the organic food store sells it here--same place that sells small bags of carob chips.
