| Just spayed-when to bathe? Milli was spayed Friday. She kind of smells funny-like the vet's office. How long do you think I should wait before giving her a bath? She has NO external sutures, as they did the internal dissolvable stitches and then surgical glue. I've been wiping her down with baby wipes-I figured the newborn kind would be gentle enough to use on her sensitive and now shaved belly and the rest of her furry little body, but I think she really needs a bath! Anyone have any ideas?

| If I remember correctly, when LillyBelle was spayed the vet told me wait at least 10-14 days. You dont want her to get an infection. Today is Sunday, , you could call your vets office tomorrow, but I would not submerge her in water today. Im sure she doesnt feel like having a bath after just having surgery either, could be quite painful being moved around that much. Last edited by sgab80; 07-01-2007 at 06:06 AM. Reason: correction |

| Right...thanks for your info. Do you think I could more or less spray and rinse her down in the kitchen sink, and not submerge her like I would for a regular bath? Or, should I stick with a warm wet washcloth?

| I think the less you move her around the better. Did her vet give you any pain medication to bring home with you. Lillybelle had pain medication that I gave her for 4 days after surgery. I just wouldnt worry too much about bathing, or cleaning unless she wets or soils herself, then just use a clean cloth, not baby wipes. Really, she has had major surgery and I would just give her time to heal. I dont usually bring this up, but Ive been a neonatal nurse for over 20yrs, so unless you see a sign of infection, dark yellow-green drainage, bleeding, swelling, she's not eating, peeing, -that would give you a reason to call her vet...Im sure you have a discharge paper with specific instructions from your vet.... I would let her rest and heal...just love on her...dont worry about a bath..ok? |

I am giving her the pain meds the vet sent home, and I can tell she needs it. The vet said it's like doggie ibuprofen, which will help with the swelling and the pain. Her incision looks great-we had it checked yesterday at the vet. I've got a onesie on her to keep her from bugging her it, and so far so good! The hardest part is keeping her from being too rambunctious! She forgot that she had major surgery two days ago, and wants to roughhouse with Emma, jump, run up and down stairs, and to chase rabbits!

| Ok-good. I know we want them to be lovely, sweet smelling and beautiful, like they are all the time...she may not act like it, but internally her body is trying desperately to recover....to bad you cant get her to rest...thats just like a woman! Good luck to you. |

| I know, it's strange...when people have hysterectomies, they are down for 6 weeks! Milli was down for 6 hours, and back to it again! My feisty girl is too busy to relax Actually, they're both sleeping at my feet right now-good sign!

| I'm holding off on bathing for now...she's pretty clean, and the vet scent has worn off. Milli doesn't have stitches that need to come out-they're dissolvable and inside, with surgical glue on the outside. They did this same technique on Emma, and you can't even see her scar 9 months later!

| When Lacy was spayed, the vet said no bath for 10 days when her stitches could come out. However, she ended up being too active too soon and tore the internal stitches and had to be reopened and restitched after three days so she actually didn't get a bath for like 14 or 15 days.
