Any advice will be appreciated...Please help!!!

My baby will go in for a liver shunt surgery in a month's time and I was wondering if they will be able to spay him as well under the same anesthetic...as last time they put him under he died for a couple of minutes. I don't want to go through that again unless it is really necessary like the liver shunt surgery. Please...any advice will be highly appreciated.

My yorkie went in for exploratory surgery for his liver shunt(unfortunately, they didn't find it), but they did go ahead and do another procedure (PU surgery) while he was under ...
They neutered him another day though knowing that he was going to have the liver shunt surgery...I'm with you though, the least amount of times my baby has to go under, the better. But then again, maybe they don't want to keep him under too long...

Do they use gas for this procedure? I've read that gas isn't as hard on them as the injectable anaesthesia.

I'm sure they use isoflourine for anesthesia. You can ask if they can do the neuter during the shunt surgery. it will probably depend on how comfortable they are with his stats during the shunt surgery. If all goes well they may be able to do it. doesn't hurt to ask. hopefully he'll do better this time around. Is he going to the same place he had the first surgery done?

No, that was our own vet. This time he will go to Bristol University in the UK. Hopefully this will be a lot better as they are more specialised in liver shunts.

my thoughts and prayer are with you...and I am sorry I am not able to answer that for you...have you tried asking the vet...he/she might have a better answer since every vet is different...

hmm, that's a tough call then. still i would ask to see if it was possible for them to do it so that he doesn't need a another surgery in the future. If your vet has already faxed them the records, make sure to ask them if they see that he had problems under anesthesia before. there are a number of reasons why he could have done poorly the first time.

ex. The Chi i am fostering had two surgerys done on her fractured front leg. For the first surgery we gave her a pre-med that knocked her on her ass. While the drug was in effect her heart rate and blood pressure were Extremely low and it was worrying. as the drug wore off her stats got better. The second surgery a day later was done without the pre-med we gave her the day before.

does your vet know what exactly caused him to do poorly under anesthesia? did he tell you what happened? did his heart stop or did he just stop breathing?

Thanks for the prayers. I will ask the vet tomorrow and see what they say. I have been to see the vet today and I came home with a bag full of medicines for Boo-Boo just in case he goes into another seasure.That has made me quite upset.

I wanted to ask everyone. My baby is howling when he is in a seasure. Do you think that it hurts him or is just an effect of the saesure? It doesn't happen on every seasure but my heart is breaking when it does b/c I keep thinking that maybe he's hurting and asking for my help...I just don't know anymore.

Hi there...my baby's heart did stop but my vet did not told me exactly what happened and why...if he's allergic to that anesthesic drug or what? I am not sure that is why I am so nervous about him going under again.
I will make sure I REMIND THE VET ABOUT IT THO...

Well, Miko's bladder produces ammonium urate stones because of his liver issues...As long as his liver is not functioning up to par, his body will continue producing these...Since they were not able to find the shunt, they decided to do this surgery which basically makes him pee out of a different hole. He no longer pees out of his penis because the urethra is way too small to allow him to pass the stones...So they made a larger hole about an inch long kind of like where a female would pee out of, and he pees out of there and is able to pass most of the stones without any problems.
They wouldn't need to do that for your baby though since he doesn't have bladder stones, and he's getting his liver shunt fixed.
I'm sure they will use the gas anesthesia since they are experienced with fixing liver shunts in small dogs.

What kind of medicines did they prescribe for your baby's seizures...I hope it's not valium or anything like that, as that will cause them more liver problems...An antibiotic like clavamox is what is recommended for the seizures to help clear the toxins out of the body. Is your baby on a low protein diet and lactulose?

I'm sorry, I don't know a lot about liver shunts so I can't offer any helpful advice, but it sounds like you've gotten some good tips from other YT'ers. I just wanted to say I'm so very sorry your little baby isn't well, and I pray everything goes great with the surgery and he has a healthy and speedy recovery. It sounds like he has a very good Mommy who loves him a lot. Best wishes!
