Loose stool I have a 5 month old Yorkie (Chica) who has begun to have loose stool / diahrrea. She eats well, drinks lots of water, is playful as a puppy should be, etc.. She shows no sign of discomfort at all. Ever since we've had her, she's had soft stool more frequently than normal. But, just recently it's gotten worse. I've had the stool tested a few weeks ago and everything was OK and now I may have it tested again. I've tried the rice / hamburg diet and still no improvement. I stopped giving her treats and still no improvement. She started teething at the same time she started having loose stool. Could this be related? The vet says no. She stays alone at home from 8-4 (Monday - Friday). Could it be stress related from being alone? If that was the case, the problem would have started from the start, right? Is there anyone here that can share their thoughts of what they think this might be. Of course, I'm actually going to the vet tomorrow, but I'm always open to new suggestions. Thanks. Andr

Hi and My Tetley is like that too. He's 6 months old and has always had a sensitive tummy. I've just accepted the fact that that's just how he is! I had him tested too and nothing showed up in the screen. Maybe Chica needs a change in diet. What are you feeding her right now? Once I started adding Missing Link to Tetley's meals I found his digestion got a little bit better. He still can't eat bully sticks though, or he has an upset tummy afterwards. I've just tried to keep track of what Tetley's triggers are so that I can avoid them. I hope Chica feels better soon. As long as she's still active and playful, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Thanks for the info. She started out eating "First Choice", which was recommended by the breeder. But, 2 months ago we switched her on another brand called "Holistic Blend", which has no animal by-products and was recommended by a nutritionist. When we first switched her, we noticed a small difference but it came back as it was a while later. I also make sure to de-worm her every month. Anyways, at least she's housebroken and does it all on her pad and not the carpet :-)

please keep a close eye on her.. if this continues for more than 2 or 3 days.. bring her into the vet.. they dehydrate SO fast... it's not something to take lightly... try just feeding white rice and boiled chicken if this continues... make sure she drinks.. if she won't... go get some pedialyte and an eye dropper and give her some. poor little girl!

She went to the vet this morning and the vet gave me some Apo-Metronidazole to see if it would help. Also gave them a stool sample so will wait for the results of that. The vet also advised to give her boiled hamburg and white rice for 1 week. Anyhow, will try that and see. I may change her diet if all of that doesn't work. Her stool was pretty good this morning, so who knows?

I know what you are going through My 3 month old Madison has had diarrhea for a week now, I took her to the vet when it first started, he gave her some medicine, I am feeding her royal canin puppy 33 and pedigree little champions chicken, he told me to take her off the pedigree. She is doing better now, these little babies have such sensitive stomachs I hope your baby gets feeling better, sending prayers your way

Well, it's been over a week now and Chica's stool is normal... Knock on wood I gave her the vet's medication, but I also switched her food. We had been giving her chicken-based food and switched her to lamb-based food. I bet you anything that this was all food related. Everything we had been giving her was always chicken-based and now that we've switched her, No more problems (for now anyways). So, I'll follow my instinct and not feed Chica any food that has chicken in it. Wish me luck

On another note, I uploaded a picture of Chica but can't see it on my posts. Any idea why it's not showing?

Why did the Vet. give her medication? You are guessing it may have been food related. You said you think because all she was given was chicken, but in your first post you said you gave her hamburger. Anyway, I'm not really sure what all you have given her, but I do know the rice and hamburger would not have given her diarrhea. It could have been something she has found to eat inside or out. For a Vet. to give medication without a real cause of the problem has me confused. Was there more to her problem?

The vet always thought it was worm-related (or an upset stomach), so she gave her medication to treat that. During that phase, the vet suggested to switch her to hamburg & rice for 1 week, as this is easy on her stomach. Her stool was fine with that, but this was the 3rd time we had tried this remedy and the stool always came back loose. I never said the hamburg & rice gave her diarrhea? So, I decided to switch her food, after that 1 week, to lamb and it's been fine since. I don't see anything wrong with that? Last edited by raleclerc; 03-31-2007 at 10:56 AM.

about the hamurg & rice... when we were giving her the hamburg & rice for 1-week periods, her stool was OK. However, as soon as we re-introduced her chicken-based food in her diet the stool immediately became loose. We saw a pattern and decided to try something different and so far so good. It's not the first time we've heard of puppies / dogs reacting differently to certain types of food so I don't think it's more than that. The 2nd stool sample was tested and came back OK. Chica's not showing any kind of discomfort and eating her new food very well.
