| I am so torned - help me with mange and my puppy again long story short.. I have had a puppy who is almost 4 months old... we have had for about 4 weeks. We just found out 2 weeks ago she has sarcoptic mange. Took her to vet; gave us medicine and special shampoo lotion. Well I went back to vet today after 2 weeks and he wouldnt even do another skin scrape. He said he wouldnt do it because if it was a "negative" result it could very well be a false negative. My poor puppy is in her crate, per vet this is very contagious and wants her quarantined.... now they tell me I need to wait another 2 WEEKS until they will do second skin scrape and to keep her in quarantine until then. This is driving me nuts!!!!!! I do have a daughter at home, so I dont want to go against vet's wishes. I guess my question is, she isnt even itching anymore, no scabs, nothing... no clinical signs... she has had 3 doses out of the 4 that they prescribed. Do you think I should take her to another vet or is this one being pretty on the nose as far as treatment. They are very precautious obviously there Do you think I should get rid of her? |

| No, don't get rid of her. Mange can be treated. I would take her for a second opinion. Keeping her crated for almost a month is a bit extreme in my opinion. Here is a link I found:http://www.marvistavet.com/html/sarcoptic_mange.html I would definately take her in for a second opinion after reading this article.

| I would get a second opinion definitely. Remember When I told you We stopped the dips on Chachi. He was also healing up and no longer scratching and the dips were making him very sick. We went to another vet and he did a skin scrape said it was negative and Chachi didnt have to be dipped anymore. I think yourr pup is improving and I bet all the mites are dead

| Thanks guys. I am just so upset as you can tell. It just seems sooooo extreme to me to have to watch her in isolation for another 2 weeks. She isnt itching whatsoever, no signs, nothing.... Sometimes I think it would be easier to not have her, instead of watching her cry everyday from no attention from the family. I know easy way out... I am just very frustrated. My husband thinks, okay, just lets keep her crated for another 2 weeks... and things should be fine, which they propably will, but I feel with my heart too much, and it is breaking my heart to see her alone. |

| I am sooo sorry you are going thru this. Being a yorkie mom is not going to be without problems. They have to be faced and dealt with. This is part of being a parent. But if you get rid of her then what. She is going to go thru the same thing with someone else. Get a second opinion please and see what the new vet says. Vets have been know to be wrong. |

| I just called my vet for you and he said that this type of mange can take up to several weeks to get rid of. He said they treat with Ivermectrin and do skin scrapings every two to three weeks and when they have had three scrapings clear then your dog may be past infecting you. So this is a long time fix, hang in there it will be worth it in the end. |

| Yes unfortunately after talking to another vet yesterday they said I should wait the next 2 weeks as a precaution for my baby. My daughter's well being is much more important than the dog being out. But it makes me feel bad emotionally that the dog doesnt get attention like she should. Well keep us in your thoughts and prayers for a fast 2 weeks They said the mites are propably gone since she doesnt have the clinical signs, but better safe that sorry. |

| I'm sorry that you can't enjoy your new little guy. We had a dog with the same thing once, and my husband did get something from it. So I guess it's best to keep him crated. |

| Yes I can imagine and that is why I just wanted to get rid of the dog when I found this out. My husband feels we should just keep her crated until the problem is corrected. I am giving the situation another 2 weeks like the vet said and we will see what happens after that ... thank you all for being so helpful and listening |

| It is all going to be okay once you get rid of the mites for good. This is not a kind of mite that comes back once it is gone so you will have lots of years of love and fun when this is past. I can only imagine how you feel right now but once she is free of her little friends and you get to hug and kiss her all will be forgotten, just remember how much she needs your help right now and you will have the patience you need to get through this. If you run out you can put her on a plane COD to me and I will take care of her for you. I am not joking...... |

| Debbie, I almost did get rid of her, I wanted to take her to the humane society and they said "yep we will take her, mange and all"! I called them up crying and said we paid a TON of money for this dog, she has all her meds, I can give you just find her another good home in the future. But like I said, my husband talked me out of it, reminding me how bad I would feel in a few weeks when the problem was gone. I believe you would take her, it seems a lot of people would even with her problem!!! You must love your Yorkies!!! The vet said to keep her isolated for another 2 weeks... you know what my husband is doing right now!?!?!?! Gave her a bath (with him in the shower) he has been doing this the whole entire time we have had her for six weeks now, the 4 weeks she had it and we didnt know and now the 2 we know that she has it.... and then he was holding her in his lap watching tv, telling me "your crazy this dog is fine.... she doesnt even have any symptoms now!" I am sooooooo glad my daughter is sleeping right now!!!! I made him put the dog away and told him he is crazy!!! I know you are right though... I cant wait to hold her/kiss her like she deserves! She is so darn beautiful!!! |

| That is such a sad story and what a lot you have been through. The offer will stand just in case you need it , but I am sure she is going to be okay. Does she have a medicated shampoo that needs to set on her for some time and is your husband making sure he follows the directions? I am sure he is and it sounds like he is going to be a good daddy for your furbaby too. I had a client in the grooming shop that got this mite from her dog several years ago. Her dog got very sick before they found out what the problem was and so did she. Well her dog is now 10 years old and very healthy and very pretty, her mom and my friend died of cancer about a year ago, but oh how she loved that dog!!!! |

| I am so sorry about the mange but your daughter's health does come first. Are you taking the dog for walks and letting the little thing get some exercise? The article did say to wash everything it comes in contact with in hot soapy water... Did you get the dog with mites from the breeder? What did they say? Can you imagine having to treat all your dogs? Poor things...
