Delima: When should I get Hootie fixed? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Here's my delima....when I get Hootie fixed, I also want to get her retained baby teeth pulled. I don't want to have to put her down twice like I had to do for Hobbs. My vet said that I could go ahead and get her fixed whenever I wanted to and she would just pull all her baby teeth even if she didn't have an adult tooth in yet. That way, I wouldn't have to put her down twice and I also wouldn't be risking her going into heat before I get her fixed. Hootie will be 6 months old on November 2. Should I go ahead and get her fixed and go ahead and let the vet pull all her baby teeth even if she doesn't have an adult tooth in yet? Or, should I wait until she is done teething? I know yorkies are generally done teething around 7 months of age, but I am afraid of waiting too long because I don't want her to go into heat before I get her fixed. A whole lot of her baby teeth have been falling out lately, so I don't think that she'll retain that many. But if the vet pulls all her baby teeth, will the vet be able to tell the difference between a baby tooth and an adult tooth? Even her adult teeth that have come in are SO incredibly tiny! What should I do???

You could go ahead and get her fixed or you could wait its really up to you. Your vet will know the difference of the baby teeth an the adult teeth. I got Jewels done at 6 months and the vet pulled 4 teeth that he didnt think would come out on their own.

That's a hard one, because we are all so cautious with our babies in varying degrees. I took the chance with Izzie and waited until she was 8 months old to have her spayed and baby teeth pulled. They ended up pulling 6, but I had thought they said 9. I was mistaken, I was so nervous about it all. I felt a little comfortable waiting because her mother didn't have her first heat until she was 17 months old. So I was hoping that Izzie might do the same. I didn't wait as long as I was wanting to, but I didn't want her to have a heat either and well, ya just never know for sure when that will happen.

I've got the EXACT same dilema with Ruthie - except she hasn't lost ANY of her teeth yet. I dont see any signs of her adult teeth coming in either. She'll be 6mths old on Oct.29th so she could really be spayed any time now.
