| Tiny Yorkie, need help! Hello Everyone, I am new to these forums and I am glad to be here. I have an 8 week old Yorkie-Poo (75% Yorkshire 25% toy poodle) and she weighs just under 1 pound. I just got her last week so I am learning every day. When she has a bowel movement, the hair gets sticky and matted on her bottom. She has trouble going to the bathroom when the hair is hard and matted. We trimmed some of the hair and put Vaseline around the area. I can’t be there to put Vaseline on her ever time, is there anything else I could do to prevent it? Thanks in advance! |

| Wow that is really tiny! She's a peanut! Is her stool really loose? A yorkie's 'normal' bm should kindof look like a tootsie roll - and be firm - when it is, you don't usually have to deal with the messy bums. If her stool is a little soft, it could be due to the stress of being in a new environment (a week isn't that long, and although she may seem playful and happy, she may still be adjusting). Any slight change in a yorkie's environment or routine can disrupt their delicate systems and throw things out of wack. Are you feeding her the same food that the breeder was feeding her? If you changed her food, did you do it gradually and mix it with her old food? A sudden change in food will also cause tummy upset. As far as the vaseline - I'm not sure I understand what you are using it for - is it to kind of part the hair away from her bum? I would just trim the hair more - she's still very young and it will grow back quickly. If she has diarrhea and has had it for more than 24hrs I would take her to a vet. Is she eating and drinking well? Puppies that small can become hypoglycemic very quickly - did your breeder explain to you the risks of hypoglycemia with a puppy this small? If you don't have some already, I would get some Nutrical to have on hand. Good luck with your new little one - post some pictures! OH, and WELCOME TO YT!

| Welcome to YT. Boy your baby is tiny! I would shave the hinny area with a moustache trimmer and keep it really short in that area. Easier to keep clean. Good luck. Would love to see pictures. |

You will need to keep the bum area trimmed and cleaned as it can plug up if it cannot defecate properly, bloat and die. I would suspect a problem as it should not have such a soft poo all the time. | |

| When my pups were younger there poo was softer and would stick to them. I cut the hair around their bum real short. As they got older their poo became firmr and I didnt have that problem anymore unless they had diahrea

| Welcome to YT. This is such a great site, there is alot of information here and alot of people that are willing to answer questions. I agree I would have your puppy vet checked, that is really small. I would also ask when you call, for a vet that is very familiar with toy breeds. Every one has their likes and dislikes, even Vets. If you are not familiar with hypoglycemia do a search here on YT, there are alot of threads with that information, you will also find websites in the threads that you can go to for more information. Some people keep Caro Syrup on hand others use Nutrical. I prefer to keep Nutrical on hand. The link below is meant for new people to YT, just click on it and it will take you there. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ighlight=amber

| Hi and welcome to YT. I can't offer any info except to agree with the others to have a vet check her. She is a tiny little beauty. I love her pic in your avatar.

| Thanks for all of the helpful replies everyone! I forgot to mention that I took her to the vet already for a check up yesterday. The vet she said she is perfectly healthy out side of that problem. So she suggested to put Vaseline on her bottom so that the bm wouldn't stick. I know about hypoglycemia and I leave food and water out for her at all times. I also just bought nutri-cal. She is also drinking and eating well. The vet also gave us some food, Medical, so that she would grow healthy and strong. Her bm is soft probaly because she is just getting use to us and that we are switching her food slowly as the vet suggested. I will definitely trim more hair around her bottom. I will post more pictures of my baby soon. Thanks again! |
