PLEASE tell me someone out there has potty trained Yorkies! Seriously I am so annoyed today because my Yorkies are just not being consistent and it is driving me nuts. Do not get me wrong but for the first time today I actually thought this may not work. If they do not eventually learn to potty outside I do not know what I am going to do but I for surely know I will not live cleaning up after them forever. I feel like I am doing everything I can but it just is not working sometimes.

I am training outside and yes they are in a crate while I am not home. They do sleep with me at night and do well through the night. I just feel like some days they ROCK and than other days they forget everything totally. Like this week they have just not done anything right - I just do not get it. They KNOW what is right and wrong - UGH!!!!

Yes, there are 100% housebroken yorkies out there. Mine is and there are others on here who also have housebroken yorkies.

I can tell you that when it came to potty training, for me it was the ONLY priority I had! I was unrelenting in my watchfulness of Millie until she was housebroken. In other words, I never let her out of my site, EVER! And it took over 3 months of this non-stop vigilance before I was comfortable letting her have free range of the home (except for a few rooms).

There were a couple of things going for me. 1. Millie from day one did not mess in her crate. 2. Once we established her x-pen as an extension of her crate, she did not mess in it either 3. I had easy access to the outside and a small fenced in area for her to potty in. (So if I had to take her out every hour on the hour or be out there for 20-30 mins until she went, that was ok) 4. Eventually I got a doggie door (after she was fully house broken) and that has really been beneficial; and 5. I only had one puppy to worry with not two.

I work all day and Millie was able to hold her potty until we got home. she was somewhere between 12-14 wks old. We kept her in her crate when we were not there.

Even though I wanted to relax when I got home and every day for 3 months I was not able to and after wondering if I had made a mistake in getting Millie, she finally got house broken. Let me tell you: Those were the worst days of my life, but oh so worth it now! Now I am able to enjoy Millie and make other things priority and not have to worry about cleaning up messes every day for the rest of her life.

So it is possible and well worth the effort. So just continue to be consistent and maintain a "doggy bootcamp" mentality, it will eventually click with them.

I was very lucky with Sophie I got her when she was nine weeks old and she was potty trained in two weeks. I was the same as Ladylavender I never let her out of my sight and if I thought it was time to go potty we stayed untill she did and then gave lots of praise. She is almost two now and she still likes to be praised. Don't give up it can be done. Just be very watchful and if you think they should need to go usually they do wait it out they will eventually go. Sophie is a bigger yorkie and I have heard they are easier to train because they can hold it longer. So maybe make their potty times more frequent. Good luck.

I got Codie (my Maltese) when he was 12 weeks old. Two weeks after that he was fully potty trained but I take no credit for it -- he was VERY smart and caught on immediately! Tia (my Yorkie) took a little longer to potty train. I got her when she was 4 months old. She was fully potty trained by 6 months. She basically learned from Codie. But my Yorkie who passed away, Katie (RIP little angel), was hard to potty train. It looks A LOT of consistency and effort on my part to train her. Your Yorkies are definitely trainable -- sometimes it just takes longer then we expect. Good luck.

Thanks Ladylavendar that really was a good post and it makes me feel like I am on the right track but it is just frustrating sometimes. I do sometimes let them out of my site so that is something I have to work on. Plus my hubby is not as dedicated as I am but the first to complain they are still messing in the house. UGH!! I will try to think "DOGGIE BOOTCAMP" thats good advice!

i can feel your pain.. the moment i brag on oscar and say that he is potty trained... he has the worst day of accidents! phil is horrible about carrying the load with me... we live waaay out in the boonies so its scary at night! i have to beg him to take oscar our for me at night. but as soon as he messes up... hes mad at me lol i know how u feel. but just hang in there... be a hawk!!!! as soon as they sniff go outside and wait wait wait!... treats also are the key... oscar really picked up when we started using treats.

You'll get there, don't worry. I working on it, too. When you see that they are having one of those days, supervise them at all times and make sure you show your dissapointment when they don't go where they are supposed too and take them to the right place. Everytime they go where they shouldn't without being caught they are being detrained a bit, so try to avoid that.

Hang in there. I didn't think Daisy would ever be potty trained but she was a little over one year old before it really clicked with her. Now she NEVER has an accident. Every time she would potty or poop outside I would praise her big time and she would get a treat when she came inside. Now she tells me she has to go out by staring at me until I catch on. If she really has to go and I don't notice her right away she will do an urgent little yip and run to the door. Now she runs out, does her business and runs in all excited for her treat. I still make a fuss over her when she potties or poops outside I guess so she will never forget that she is doing the right thing going outside. There were times when I thought I would never see the day, but I am so glad she is doing so good now. Like I said, hang in there, it may take some time, but I hope not as long as mine.

I had the same problem you did. I had to actually start taking Ativan because i was having panic attacks because I felt soooo out of control. One of the things that helped me was I crated him every second I could not watch him and I am letting him out very often, he is getting better and now I cannot imagine my anxiety about having him. I also put him on a schedule that I follow pretty regularly for crating and feeding etc and that helped too. I got it from this site:
