| RC Mini 33 and allergies Hi all, Mayzie is 5 months old now. She has been on RC mini 33 for 3 of those 5 with no trouble. I have notice in the last couple of days her ears are kinda red and itchy. I just got done giving her a bath and notice that she has a couple little scratched open places in her one ear. Is it possible or has anyone had a dog develop allergies after eating the food for 3 months? If she has seasonal allergies would/could that affect her ears? I know you are not vets but I do value your opinions. I am wondering if perhaps a little cortizone creme would hurt. I hate the thought of changing her food unecessarily. Anyone? Anyone? |

| Seems unlikely to me that allergies would develop after 3 months. My puppy eats Royal Canin 33 without any problems. Any other reason she might be itchy? Fleas, ear mites, mossies, sandflies, new shampoo? I would wait a little before changing her diet if she is othewise thriving on it. Otherwise, Nutro is supposed to be good.

You could try a simple food diet, 1 protein source, 1 carb source, such as Natural Balance Venison and Rice and see if she improves. And like Sandra said, it could be ear mites. Just to be safe, I'd have my vet examine her ears.

Interesting thought-I didn't think about having to build up before a reaction....hmmmm. I'm pretty sure it is not ear mites and I know she doesn't have fleas. She licks her paws alot too-at least it seems to me. I thought maybe it had to do with allergens outside perhaps. She was outside yesterday afternoon for a while. I also bathed her yesterday with CC stuff but that isn't the first time for that either--would a skin allergy need time as well such as a "systemic" type allergy? Sandraj - what are mossies??? Thanks, Jamie

Yes, often even outside allergies can take a certain amount of exposure before symptoms occur. And then, each season, they worsen. One thing you can do to help her cope with allergies is to feed a simple food, it enables her body to use it's mechanisms to fend off other allergies. My allergist explained this to me, but I am not very good at explaining it. Paw licking can come from food allergies, and contact allergies. Often, it's hard to tell which. To complicate things even further, sometimes it's not even a true allergy, but an intolerance. You can tolerate a certain amount of exposure before you have symptoms. Sheila

| Jazzy had an allergic reaction to RC. She was being fed that since eating kibble. Thought she had kennel cough changed her food and her sneezing like symptoms stopped. The vet said she could be allergic to it guess he was right. |
