| Benadryl? For those of you who have given your furbaby benadryl did it affect them the same as it does humans. I know when I take them I get really sleepy and grouchy. My vet told me to give Sophie a 25mg tablet for her seasonal allergies. I haven't given her one yet because I am scared to. That seems like such a high dosage even though she is 12lbs. I even called them again to make sure that was the right amount. I would appreciate any advice you could give me. Thanks |

| Benadryl My puppy got a sinus infection when he was just 9 weeks old. The vet gave us liquid Benadryl for him (he was only about 1.5 pounds at the time). I gave it to him and it made him a little sleepy, but it wasn't like he was just falling over from being so tired! Try giving it around bedtime if it seems to affect your dog. If you want to be sure about the dosing, you can always check with a pharmacist~I'm sure they will be glad to discuss it with you. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali was on it last week for itching and i got the children's liquid and the vet said to give her 1.5 cc's on the syringe she gave me. i gave her .5 to see how she reacted and it didn't do much so the next dose I gave her 1.0cc and it stopeed her itching and made her sleepy. I didn't want to give her the full dose if she didn't need it.

Really he said to give a tablet? I've been giving Chloe the tiniest amount of the childrens benedryl liquid-kind. She hates it so I have to trick her into taking it by putting it with some food. It seems to be helping her. It does seem to make her sleepy but its hard to tell because she is always pretty lazy during the day when Im working.

| I was told the dose is 1mg per pound of dog. I have 2 yorkies. 1 is 2.5 lbs and the other is about 6 lbs. I use the children's liquid benedryl which, I believe is 5mg per tsp(5ml)-but don't quote me on that. I haven't had to use it in a while. Make sure you check your own bottle for the mg/ml. Anyway, what I did was simple math. and if it is 1mg/ml then I'd give 2.5ml to the little one and 6 ml to the bigger one. I usually gave it to them shortly before bed because benedryl is infamous for making people (and dogs) sleepy. In fact, some people use it as a mild sleep aid. That's what's in Tylenol PM. The liquid was pretty easy to give in a child's oral syringe that I purchased. Much easier than trying to trick them into eating a pill or forcing them to choke it down. I only give it to them when they're showing signs of allergies like excessive itching (with no other reason), excessive paw licking (with no other reason), or sneezing. Good Luck

| I looked around a little and did see some variation in the dosage of Benadryl that dogs are given -- but then, often it is being given for different reasons, and this may account for the difference in the dosage. With that being said - I certainly ran across nothing that advised anywhere that large an dose (25 mg) for a little dog. It does seem that 1 mg per pound was closer in line -- with some variation there - especially for larger dogs. I am surprised that you checked back with the vet and he again told you 25 mg. Was it "actually the vet" that said this -- or someone working in the office. (If someone was trying to read the doctor's writting - a mistake could have been made...) I do a lot of medical transcription and we have to be very careful with RX dosages - and we are very aware that "2.5" and "25" can easily be mistaken for one another. I am still concerned --- Don't give 25 mg to your little dog - call back again!!! And, be sure to speak with the vet - not another person. Let us know what you find out! Carol Jean |

| Yogi weighs 4# 10 0z and my vet has me give him 6.25mg which is 1/4 tsp, so 12.5mg would be a good starting dose for a 12lb dog. This is 1/2 tsp or 2.5cc or mls (cc and ml are the same) or give 1/2 tablet if this is what you have. It didn't make Yogi sleepy at all and it does help. Good luck.

| Thanks so much for your replies. I think 25mg is just to much. I haven't given her any yet but her allergies are starting to get worse. I am going to call the vet that Sophie used to go to. He is really good we just switched because he is so far away. I really like the new vet to but this dosage thing has me concerned. My Mom is freaking out. She is scared to death for me to give it to her. I promised I would get your alls opinion and call the other vet before I did anything. Thanks again and I will let you know what I find out. |

| Would that mean 1/2 tsp. for a 12 lb dog? Math's not my thing Yes, that would be 12.5 mg. This would be a safe dose.

| I have been doing benedryl for a few weeks now so I wanted to post an update here. CHloe is a little under 3 lbs and I give her .30 cc (Im use a small seringe the vet gave me) and if she is really bad I give her .40cc and if I give her .40cc she seems a little sleepy but its really hard to say because she normally naps during the day while I am sewing anyways. CHloe still absolutely hates the stuff if I try to use the medicine dropper and put it directly in her mouth so I use nutro lamb and rice treats (they are soft but in the form of long sticks) and I break off little pieces and sort of split them in the middle and put some medicine on them and its sort of soaks it up quickly. And then this way she gets super excited to take her medicine. The only problem I am having is her scratching really bad when the medicine wears off. Do you guys only give your dogs the benedryl once a day? What do you do when it wears off and they start scratching again?

| Mitzi is allergic too and I give her 1/2 of a chlor trimeton tablet twice a day. I crush it and mix it in her food. It is o.k. with the vet. Mitzi is 9 years old and 5 1/2 lbs. Benadryl made her throw up and acting very weird. Chlor trimeton helps but doesn't affect her behaviour. |

| One more thing: Mitzi wears a shirt all the time. For some reason it seams to help against the itching. |
