The Animal Medical Center has learned through the Department of Agriculture and Markets of a Royal Canin dog food recall. ROYAL CANIN Veterinary Diettm Canine URINARY SOtm in gel canned product has been recalled because of excessive levels of Vitamin D3. The excessive levels of Vitamin D3 have resulted in 8 cases of hypercalcemia in dogs. The attached alert from the ROYAL CANIN Company contains important information concerning the recall of this product. This product is only available for purchase through veterinarians. The following production lots are affected (the "best before" date codes are noted on the cardboard tray pack and on the bottom of each can). | Oh no, that is scary, as my cats are on the feline version of the recalled food. I guess I have to call the vet & see if the feline is also included. Thanks for the heads up... Desiree |

| O man! What is going on with these dog food companies? What do you all think? Is an an honest accident/oversite or are these companies not monitoring well enough?

| This problem appears to be related to the particular formulation of the dog food, i.e. too much of a good thing, vitamin D. This is not a recall due to contamination. This raises a question that maybe you all can answer. If dogs are not used for testing dog foods, to which many object, then does it make it more likely that problems like this will only be discovered by the adverse effects on actual pets?
