Default Royal Canine 33 For Puppies? Good or Bad?

I feed my Yorkie Royal Canine 33 for puppies and he loves it. But everyone talks about Natural Balance Diet. What's up with tthat? Is Royal Canine a bad dog food? I would as many opinions as possible please. I know he has gained 1/2 pound in like 2 weeks. Is that good? He is 2 1/2 pounds and 14 weeks.

That's what I'm feeding Tia as well. I don't think it's bad, probably not the absolute BEST there is, but not horrible either

I won't use the Royal Canin due to the corn content and the high fat content. The protein is high as well and unless you have a working yorkie they don't need the excess fat and protein in their diets. Its harder to digest and I know of more than one abnormal blood test done while on the food.

This of course is my opinion based on my research. Everyone feeds what they think is best.

Default Solid Gold

I agree with the poster above who writes that Royal Canine is too fatty. My dogs ARE performance dogs and THEY were getting chubby on it. It’s great for show coats because of all the additional oil (my goodness, the kibble is actually kinda greasy!) but for the average pet, I just think it’s a recipe for pudginess (no wonder why they like it so much – I like McDonalds French Fries too!). All that said, I DO think Royal Canine is a lot better than many other commercial/pet shop brand dog foods.

I feed my own dogs Sold Gold Just A Wee Bit. No corn, much lower fat, and made from top ingredients. YORKSHIRE TERRIER RESCUE has now become a distributor for Solid Gold. If you buy this kibble from them, you will be doing two good deeds – one for your own dog and one for Yorkies in need. I think the website is http://www.ytnr.org or http://www.ytnr.com When you got to the site click on the link for “country store.”

Thats a good question i was going to post that exact question. I find my puppy ( 6 1/2 months) Royal canine and when he because 10 months I'm going to switch him to the adult Royal Canine for Yorkies, which is made especially for them. I was told at Petco that it is a good brand. It seems as though this is the only dry food my baby will eat.

Question

Does anyone here use Flint River Ranch? I found it through a yorkie website and my dog loves it. It is all natural, human grade. I've never heard anyone else mention it though and it would be just my kind of luck that I think I'm buying something great and it ends up on the news as some scam.

Default Royal Canin Yorkie 28

I feed my male, Artie (he is 1 yr. and almost 3 months old) Royal Canin Yorkie 28, Adult Formula. He was eating the puppy formula until he turned 10 months old. What are you all talking about, this dog food was made especially for Yorkies and their specific nutrional needs, breed specific, I feel it is the best high quality dog food out on the market. As far as the ingredients they are; salmon, rice, green tea, omega 3 fats and special vitamins. He used to be really picky and still is, but he always eats it....somedays he eats more than others, but for the most part it is the only thing he will eat consistently! He is very active, actually hyper! I think it's Great! It is very hard to find and it is pricey as far as dogfood goes? But he's worth every penny of it. He is about 6 pounds and he is not overweight at all, he is very compact and muscular for this breed.

As I said everyone feeds what they think is best. This is just my reasoning for my choice.

Remember its marketed for Yorkies for a reason. We are crazy about our babies and will spend the money. Let me show you the difference in what I feed and the RC YT.

RC says its made for their coats and adds fatty acids for that. Their amount is about .15% more than what I feed in omega 3 and .9% in omega 6.

RC also has corn gluten meal (cheaper source of protein) as the 4th ingredient also it has beet pulp for filler and fiber. Word has it that beet pulp can make more tear stains and bronze the coat up sometimes.

Its also 28% protein and 18% fat compared to what I feed that's 21% and 10% fat. I like the lower fat and protein, its easier on the digestive system.

Here is the list so you can compare yourself.

Natural Balance Sweet potato and fish..........

sweet potatoes, salmon, salmon meal, menhaden fish meal,
canola oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid),
sweet potato fiber, DL-methionine, L-lysine, sodium chloride, salmon oil,
flaxseed oil, rosemary extract, natural flavor, yucca schidigera extract,

Flint river and solid gold are both good foods. I can't get mine to eat Solid Gold and I forget to order flint. There are lots of good foods out there. No one food fits all dogs. You have to go with what suits your home best.

Wow I guess that says a lot about the different brands. Wouldn't it be okay to give them that if they are exercising? My Vet recommended that dog food for him. But I will give them a call and see. How does it bronze the coat out more?

Thanks CC's. I needed to hear that someone else has heard of this brand.

I wish that I could find the photos of a cream-colored dog before and after beets were removed from it's diet. There was quite a difference from strawberry-blonde to cream!

Curcumin (the yellow pigment of turmeric plants) has a yellowing effect, by the way.

We don't mind the beets in the Royal Canin 33 because Bodhi is black and tan, so that works perfectly. If he does get more of a silver head, then we'll reevaluate whatever food is for whatever age that may occur.

We aren't concerned about the fat content. Bodhi has gained only 60 ounces in 3 weeks. We've been doing a bit of agility pre-training anyways.
