My 12 year old Chewbud has Halitosis!

I know, I shouldn't be making light of Chewy's bad breath. He wants to kiss everybody and the poor thing smells aweful. Chewbud will be 13 this November and he's is excellent shape. His teeth are all intact and a little yellow, but not bad. He had his teeth professionally cleaned Dec. 2004 and that about did me in...having to see him so "limp" from the antithesia. We'll never put him through that again. Has anyone had any luck with breath products (mints, sprays, etc.). My husband and I try to brush his teeth regularly, but doesn't seem to effect the foul odor. Any tips are appreciated!

I have never experienced this but it wouldn't hurt to try those sprays. I also suggest a change in diet. What are you feeding him?

Hello and thanks for writing. Okay, I saw a spray on another member's post "Dog Smog"...which I think I'll pick up today. Chewbud eats Royal Canine Yorkie 28. Is Zoe a senior dog too? He doesn't look old, but I saw how "Donating Senior Yorkie Talker " is above his pic!

No experience with this situation with Tatum (our Yorkie) but with Dax (our poodle - RIP), we had serious breath issues. His teeth were really bad though and even though we had cleanings every few years, they still had to pull teeth occasionally. When the smell would get really bad, that usually indicated that a tooth or two was rotting and needed to come out. I know that can be scary but he went through the "surgeries" with flying colors every time - even when he got older and had heart issues he was on medication for. I'm just wondering if Chewy's problem is rotten teeth maybe? If so, it's definitely something to take care of because the infection can spread into their blood system. Good luck.

You're right, thank you. I'm just wondering whether a rotten tooth would promote a fishy odor? (Chewy has that fishy odor)

Oh, well, I'm not sure how to actually describe the bad breath that Dax had but I can just say it wasn't pleasant! Chewy's problem very well could be his diet. You might consider that angle instead of trying to just cover up the smell. I would think there's usually a very good reason for the smell and in Daxton's case it was the rotten teeth - Chewy might need a diet change given that he's getting up there in age. I know Daxton's vet had us change food over the years as he got older - different Science Diet formulas for his health issues and seniority.

why dont you try given some bully sticks to gnaw on...i find that when lexi
chews on bones, her teeth get cleaned and her breath smells good.. but gotta say, her breath never smelled bad, maybe cause she is still young, or i give her bully sticks non stop...
