Hello yorkie parents! Ella's 2 years and a few months old and she got her dental cleaning done today. She lost 1 tooth, top left side, the small one all the way back. I feel defeated that I couldn't keep that one tooth healthy, but grateful that I chose to get her cleaning done even though it's really expensive.

How do you you guys keep your dog's mouth healthy? Mines not a big fan of greenies or milk bone so not really sure what else I could do.

I give Gidget a denta stick every day. Brushing her teeth is NOT an option with her.

Honestly most of it comes down to genetics. You can brush every day and that will help but that’s about all you can do. Chews really don’t do that much. My oldest has to have dentals yearly. You don’t have to bush the inside of their teeth because their mouth cleans the inside, you just have to brush the outside.

Thanks, sometimes we blame ourselves for not doing enough to keep the teeth healthy. Seems like there's only so much we can do. All we can do is our best.

I think brushing your teeth before going to bed is a must.

A month after her cleaning, and her teeth still looks nice and clean. I still brush her teeth every night. I'll keep doing what I'm doing -- she's really not liking dentastix or greenies.

Brush, brush, brush with enzymatic toothpaste for dogs. Plus give Tibbe MiniMilkbone plus some of his regular kibble kept in with the Milkbones for treats, no human food. And those bi-annual full-body checkups including the mouth, teeth & gums, lab work & dental cleanings once yearly. Also need to examine those little muzzles daily, parting the thick hair to look for areas showing swelling, fullness and/or redness, which could precede a tooth abscessing through the muzzle wall, which is pretty awful.
