| Antibiotics for Dental Has anyone else that has had dental work done on their dogs been prescribed a antibiotic to be taken before and after dental procedure? My Lola was prescribed Amoxicillin/Clavamox 125 mg. Was supposed to take two a day for three days before procedure. After second day (4 pills) she got very sick; throwing up and stopped eating. We had to cancel dental work for now. After a couple of days and antibiotic getting out of her system she's back to normal. Now I'm told that antibiotics are used only because during the dental procedure there's a lot of bacteria present because of the cleaning or pulling. Is everyone prescribed antibiotics for before and after the dental procedure? |

| Except for this last dental Callie has only gotten antibiotics if they needed to remove a tooth. With no extractions it should be ok unless her gums are very inflamed.

| I guess it depends upon the veterinarian. I believe my vet is conservative with medicine, but he has always prescribed an antibiotic with dentals, even without an extraction for the same reasons your vet stated. The antibiotics were prescribed post dental only. Last edited by lisaly; 11-13-2018 at 02:44 PM. |

| I think our vet only did after but I wouldn’t be opposed to having it before the procedure especially if extractions are planned.

| Yup. My vet gave me them to start two or three days prior to the dental and then we finished them after. He had all 6 lower incisors pulled and even though they didn't know they'd be removing those, I think they assumed they'd at least have to extract one, so to start on the antibiotics just to be safe so when they got in there, the bacteria wouldn't get into his system etc.
