Tiny Yorkie weight under 3lbs

My little girl is 8 years old, very active and very tiny. She has always been tiny since we got her. Never over 3 lbs (or close to it). She feels boney, eats well. She is on soft food (Fresh Pet). Would like to get a few ounces on her so she feels healthy. Suggestions.....

You should check with your vet to make sure he is on the same page about your dog needing to gain weight. If so, there are appetite stimulants like Mirtazapine (available by prescription) that you could try.

Is it true for dogs in the way it is for humans--does muscle weigh more than the alternative?

Does she get a real good workout every day? A few long walks?

3 lbs ... I thought my Yorkie was the smallest of Them all, she never passed 5lbs all her life and she almost 7 yrs old. I never thought of trying to fatten her up. I think she perfect the way god made her, small and petite

It is actually a myth that muscle weighs more then fat.

I would first check with the vet because unseeded extra weight can hurt more then help.

If you and her Vet think it's safe to put on a little weight, then I'd use calorie-dense treats of like peanut butter and cheese - as long as she has no history of pancreatitis or other issues. And add a little puppy food to her regular food perhaps.

While it may be a myth there is some truth in this old saying. A pound is a pound so one cannot weigh more than the other. But muscle is more dense and will therefore take up less space. A pound of fat can be up to 4 times larger than a pound of muscle. So a dog (or human) that is mostly muscle will look smaller than one that weighs the same but is mostly fat.

I get what your saying. It’s a big pet peeve in my house to say muscle weighs more the fat lol. My parents hate it.

Good health is more important that extra weight. Took Gidget to the Vet last week for her yearly checkup. She weighed 4.9. Vet said she was perfect and to keep doing whatever it was and and not change anything. So don't obsess over weight unless the Vet is concerned.

My Cali is tops at 3.8 pounds on a fat day. She runs agility constantly and loves to eat. People are always astonished with his little she weights and how much she eats. I have to be sure she gets enough calories so she feels full but she does not gain. The agility activity is good for both of us
