YT 2000 Club Member | Dog food I fed royal canin and my yorkies loved it. My concern is the level of fat. My vet says not to feed food higher than 9 % fat . I am feeding life's abundance which I order on line. I am wondering and checking the fat in this. Sure don't want pancreatitis. |

For their All Life Stage Dog Food Grain Free, the fat content is 19% minimum . See https://www.lifesabundance.com/Pets/...%28Pet_Base%29 For their Adult Weight Loss Dog Food, the fat content is 11.5% minimum, which is better, for those who want a lower fat diet. See https://www.lifesabundance.com/Pets/...%28Pet_Base%29 For comparison, both Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier and Wellness Core Grain Free Small breed are fat content 16% minimum. See https://www.chewy.com/royal-canin-yo...adult/dp/33866 and https://www.chewy.com/wellness-core-...breed/dp/37168 . We feed Wellness Core Grain Free Small Breed to our Bella, but we've also had good results with Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier in the past. The only reason we switched was advice from a human dentist (some Yorkietalk members know who I'm talking about ) and we never got around to switching back because she was doing so well on the Wellness Core.

Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Weight Control Small Breed is 9% minimum fat content: https://www.chewy.com/royal-canin-ve...eight/dp/33967 Wellness Core Grain Free Reduced Fat Turkey and Chicken Recipe is 10 to 12% minimum fat content: https://www.chewy.com/wellness-core-...d-fat/dp/34345 Of these two, I would probably go with the Royal Canin, since I know they have veterinary nutritionists on staff. I would only go with a low fat dog food if a veterinarian specifically recommended it for weight loss or to prevent pancreatitis.

YT 2000 Club Member | Dog food Last year my yoŕkìes had sensitive stomach issues. Vet put them on hills I'd wet food. They are still eating that. I put them on lifes abundance. They are doing well. Vet said it's the estimated dry fat that matters. If yorkies are prone to pancreatitis should we have them on low fat diets to prevent it in our dogs. |

| Why didn’t you leave them on what the vet had them on? Why not talk to him about this? I think you might be switching foods a bit often.

From the article: Quote:
And on fats in dog food: https://www.petmd.com/dog/nutrition/...ur_dogs_health Unless your dog has a specific health issue, most quality dog foods, and especially dog foods from companies with veterinary nutritionists on staff (like Royal Canin), are well-balanced. (I'll try to find out if Wellness has a veterinary nutritionist on staff, since they've been part of this conversation.) If your vet makes a specific recommendation that is out of the norm, such as a prescription food, it is probably because he or she feels that your dog has a health condition that needs to be addressed, and you should follow their directions and ask them further questions if you're not sure.

| Protein and Fat table from Drs. Foster and Smith. Attached is a supplemental table from Drs. Foster and Smith on the recommended protein and fat content for dog food. Note that it depends on the growth stage and type of dog. For a typical adult Yorkie, the recommendation would be about 15-30% protein and 10-20% fat. |
