I've just adopted a 6 year old Yorkie: Matti. she was lethargic and sleeping all day and not interested in food so on the 2nd day I took her to the vet. The old owners gave me the name of the Animal Hospital where she has been ever since she was a puppy. I had the adoption papers so the vet told me that she had multiple bladder infections. I went ahead and had a full physical and blood and urine tests. Found out that she had a bad bladder infection and I got 10 days worth of antibiotics.
I got a call back from the animal hospital the next morning with the test results. They told me that they received the blood work and uranalysis report. They told me the liver enzymes are high and white blood cells are showing and found crystals in the urine. They want an ultrasound to be done to figure out why she is having blood in the urine and why the enzymes are off. The ultrasound estimate is $721.35. They are sure if she has kidney stones or a tumor she will need to have surgery.
None of these are covered via the PetSecure insurance I purchased as they are pre-existing conditions. My husband and I talked about all this. I feel so very sad as I was just so looking forward to dog ownership and I’ve adopted a very sick dog. I most likely can just keep her comfortable and give her a loving home as long as she can live with her illness. We do not have the $ to do all the testing and surgery. I want to maybe explore and learn about other remedies. I know cranberries are good for humans and a pet store told me I can add cranberry powder
I am so so so very sad. Do you know anything about homeopathic remedies for dogs? I will research those and see what I can maybe do to help her kidney.

She needs to have the testing done. Have you thought about surrendering her to a rescue that can get her the help she needs? I suffered from bladder infection after infection and it is extremely painful. You need to find the cause.

I will work with a cheaper vet office via SPCA. I am not going to give up on her. I think a dog is not a sweater I can't just give up on her and return her to old owner or SPCA., We will figure it out. She is feeling real good right now and the antibiotics are helping her. I'll watch if the infection returns after we finish the 6 more days of antibiotics and see what is next. Thank you.

If you can not afford to properly care for her, you really should turn her over to someone who can....or a yorkie rescue. Who did you "adopt" her from? I cannot imagine someone adopting a dog out to someone in such sick shape. So sad.

The testing really needs to be done. There are so many things that this could be...she may have bladder stones and she also have a liver shunt and if so, needs surgery to repair it! Yorkies sometimes don't show the typical signs of a congenital shunt and will develop urate stones as adults. I had that happen to one of mine. This baby does not need homeopathic or palliative care...she needs to have the tests done and treatments or surgery done as needed.
Please do the right thing and find someone to help her!

PLEASE don't look for remedies ... you don't even know what is wrong!!! No one can tell you the right treatment for this poor baby. She needs the testing and a diagnosis!

I am sorry you have been put in this terribly sad position.

OK. I'll get the ultrasound done to see about the bladder infection. I was quoted $731 for the test,m so will need to find another vet and see if I can have a payment plan. I did apply for insurance but now they consider this as a pre-existing condition.

If she has a liver shunt, that will not be pre-existing!

Over here we have something called care credit that is a credit card just for vet expenses. Do yall have something like that?
