Yorkie Talker | My new baby does not want to eat I have a 6 month old yorkie weighing in at 2.5 pounds and she has no interest in her food. I feed my older yorkie adult royal canin kibbles and she will pick at that but my vet told me she should not eat this because she needs the nutrients in puppy food. Vet also is concerned because she said she is severely underweight. She has baby teeth under her adult teeth in front so I thought this may be bothered her. My vet will not take them out until she gains weight. I had blood work done and all came back fine except for sugar a little high. I am now waiting on resuls of acid bile test to ro liver shunt. I have tried mixing kibbles with canned food as well as kibbles with Stella and Chewey's topper. I even tried mixing cat food but she does not want to eat. I am just wondering how much I should expect a tiny one like this to consume in one day. I have another 8 pound yorkie and she eats about a cup of dry daily. I would appreciate any advice that you may have. |

| Hi! I have a 11 week old Yorkie named Roxie. I had all problems with her not eating. I ended up having to syringe feed her every 2 hours at first, but she was only 14.5 ounces! When I was at my Vet they suggested baby food, the 1st step, just meat, like chicken. NO ham. I am NO expert. I would ask the ladies on here that have so much experience! I actually feed Roxie Royal Canine also, but I also mix that will Vets Choice, Holistic Health Extension Dog Food for puppies, Little Bites! I get the chicken flavor! She absolutely LOVES this. I sincerely hope this helps! It is so frustrating and scary when they don't eat, especially when they are so small. Roxie is only 1 pound. They say she will only be around 3.5 pounds! I hope she gets bigger than that though. We will see. Her father was almost 4 pounds and mom was 5-6 pounds. |

Excellent!! I have 3 tinies and they get Health Extension Little Bites, along with RC canned.....RC has a canned puppy food that they all seem to enjoy.....or you can soften the puppy kibble in a little warm water.....I usually will mix a "gravy" of 1/3 cup warm water with a heaping tablespoon of chicken baby food mixed in to pour over the kibble to soften it. That Health Extension Little Bites is about the size of a BB or a pellet....and they all seem to love it and it is excellent dog food .....I have fed that to my tinys for about 12 years..... Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | So sorry this wee one is struggling, that's not good at all. Has the vet offered / suggested trying I/D food yet...? Worth a try. Also, try sprinkling Parmesan cheese on her food as it can be enticing. And try coconut oil...which is good both bc of the smell AND bc it is calorie dense, being an oil. Try giving calorie dense treats like peanut butter and cheese too. I'm really glad you're doing the shunt testing bc I'd be concerned about this too. Please keep us posted! Btw, how is her poo...is it firm / normal..?

Yorkie Talker | Thank you for all of the ideas. Once you mix it the kibbles with water to make gravy, if they do not eat it, can it be refrigerated for later? Last edited by cherim1025; 04-01-2016 at 08:50 AM. |

I would also get a bottle of that Health Extension Nutra Drops from Amazon.com....I would give doses of that just to be sure this baby's blood sugar stays on an even keel, even if he is not eating enough or on a regular basis. Give 1cc every 6 hours....they usually love this stuff and will eagerly lap it up from the syringe....that will make sure baby is getting vitamins and necessary glucose, kept on an even keel over the 24 hour day.....this stuff is like a tonic and a vitamin supplement.....it is great for any stressful situations...it is the very first thing I squirt into my newborn puppies mouths, following the trauma of birth.....my vet even uses it like that now!!...great stuff, get it and use it for ANY stressful situation!!! | |
