Bordatella Vaccine and NYC

I just found out that the Bordatella Vaccine is only valid for 6 mos and in NYC if you take your pet to the Groomers, Kennel, or any dog parks then you have to be up-to-date on their Bordatella Vaccine. So now they need a booster every six months according to the Law.


Luckily, my Groomer is offering low cost vaccines on Sunday. I would have never known about this law but accidently came across an article online discussing it.


Does any other cities have something similar?


What is everyone's thoughts on the vaccine? I am aware of the Core Vaccines needed once a year and assumed the Bordatella was in that group.

Most groomers, day care facilities I know of in Illinois require this also. I even stopped by a PetSmart for a toenail clip on one of my girls and they told me this also,

I would just advise you to insist on the injection for the bordatella, rather than the live virus going via a nasal drop...that live vaccine into the pups nose frequently causes kennel cough and it then costs you antibiotic/vet fees to clear that issue up, and it can progress into a very sick little dog....you wont have that issue if you use the injectable vaccine.....

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know there were different types of shots. I will make sure it is injectable. Since I only rescued my babies 6 months ago they came with their shots before I adopted them. So this is the first time having them done with me.

YES!, this happened to my baby...she didnt get kennel cough but she was congested for a month and I had to get antibiotics

And you know what is even worse about this practice?? My old vet switched from the injectable to strictly nasal form of administration....and it gave 4 of my babies kennel cough....2 of them were sniffling and coughing and mildly ill for maybe 6 weeks, but the other two we very sick, developed into pneumonia, and it took almost 6 months to get them thru that event! What is even worse, in MY mind, I was then charged for this prolong sickness for my babies....vet bills for all 4 babies ran into hundreds of dollars, for something my VET caused....I changed vets and no longer give this to my dogs....they dont go anyplace so they dont need it.....but if I was to continue having to give this crap, I would ONLY use the injectable form....not the LIVE virus they drop into their little noses.....

that is very bad! They do not want to admit its that vaccine, I took my baby 3 times to the vet because I was very scared of pneumonia

Formally from NY, still have friends there, Bordatella Vaccine is mandatory in NY if you take dog to groomers. When a friend told me this I couldn't believe it as it was never mandatory when I lived there. I googled it, seems a few years ago there was a huge outbreak of kennel cough, reason it became mandatory if groomer is used.

I got Boomer and Thumper their Bordatella Vaccine yesterday. The Vet was going to give it to them via nasal but I requested it be done via injection.


He said the common practice in the area is to give it nasal and that according to the research it is more effective that way. I asked about dogs receiving Kennel Cough from it via nasal and he said he hasn't read or heard anything about it.


He was very nice and did have the vaccine handy for it to be injected. I re-read their records from the adoption and they were originally given the vaccine via nasal.


Has any one else seen that this vaccine is being given via the nasal more often? I am glad I went him directly and not the groomer because he may have not had the injectable vaccine handy their.

The vaccine is required every 6 months for daycare also. Being that I work at the doggy daycare, my dogs get it done every 6 months.

I use the intranasal and have had no issues, nor have I seen issues among the client dogs. I do mine myself as well- you can often get the bordatella intranasal at feed or pet stores. That drops the price significantly. Daycare accepts packaging and reciept as proof of vaccination.

The first time bordatella is given it has to be the intranasal. After that, you can use the injectable. I don't do bordatella on my dogs anymore (because it is ineffective and my dog got KC twice despite being vaccinated), but when I did, I did only the intranasal. My understanding was that the intranasal was more effective, as your vet said.
