| Teddy's first cleaning.. Hi all, Teddy is having his first cleaning on Wednesday and I'm so nervous b/cuz the time for him to be put under general anesthetic has finally come. I think he's supposed to be 'starved' for 12 hours before the procedure where I believe he will be getting a deep clean and possibly some baby teeth extractions. I'll double check re: food restriction, though. Anything else I should be aware of before Wednesday? I'm sure all is fine as I know that this won't be the last time this procedure will need to be done. However, as its the first, I'm nervous! Thanks |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I reently talked with my show breeder and she mentioned to me to not to do pre op (pre operation) shots before they do the anesthetic because of their heart. Maybe someone on this forum with better knowledge could comment on this.

| Teeth cleaning Poor Teddy, and YOU! It is always scary when our babies are put under, but in fact it is very rare for anything bad to happen. So please don't fret, he will be fine. I hope you will have pre op blood and urine tests to check he is ok for the anesthetic. I am sure he will not have any health issues, but better to be safe than sorry. I hated the long fasting period as my dog is always starving when he wakes up and can throw up bile if he is deprived of food. Often vets do not do dentals in the morning, but do them in the early afternoon after the more complex ops are done with. But that just may be my experience. That means the poor dog is starved for a longer time. Perhaps most dogs are not affected by this, but mine was. I told the vet of my worries so he gave Austin a shot of Pepcid- type meds before the surgery, and it was great. My dog came home afterwards and was hungry that night, which is unusual for him after anesthetic. I had to feed only a small amount though! Hoping your baby has good tests and the dentals go well. Perhaps it is you who will need the pre op calming Valium! Xxx |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | This was what was written in some of the documents from my show breeder: and she reiterated this just the other day to me to again make me aware: This is a toy dog, make sure your vet is qualified using anesthesia on one. The isoflorane is a safe gas anesthesia, or valium w/ketomine instead for an anesthetic in the front leg of the vein, for things like removing baby teeth or teeth cleanings.. I DO NOT RECOMMEND PRE-OP SHOTS EVER! Discuss this with your vet! I would get the pre op blood work done to make sure he is good condition prior to doing the procedure. Hope this helps. Can understand your concerns.

| I would never allow my dogs to be under anesthesia with injectable anesthesia for a dental. They get induced with propofol and maintained with isoflourane gas. My dogs undergo general anesthesia. One of my dogs had her last dental a year ago at age 14. So that explains how I feel about the safety of the procedure. My vet recommends no food after midnight. They also are given a shot of cerenia before hand. They usually wake right up and recover pretty quickly. Expect grogginess the day of and possibly not wanting to eat much. Some of mine will eat like nothing happened and others just want a bite or two and sleep. By the next morning, they're all back to themselves. I'm sure it will all go off without a hitch, try not to worry.

| Thanks all so much for the advice! I am going to call the vet tomorrow and check exactly what is going to go on so I can x-reference here! Thanks again - means a lot! I would have never thought of pain meds, checking on gas vs vein, pre-op shots etc. Thanks xoxoxox |

| Teddy came through okay but apparently teeth loose from cleaning so it was suggested that he not be allowed anything to chew for two weeks. The dentist said no problem regarding loose teeth as gums will shrink within next two weeks and no adult teeth removed just four baby ones. However she went on to say that we should see a specialist next year to check no remaining baby teeth under gum line but maybe there really is a problem and she's not saying? She also said keep him out of crate when we're out cuz he chews the bars. I don't know how else to contain him since he's afraid of open spaces? Finally she said he had >1 grade heart murmur but nothing to worry about as it was borderline worth mentioning Help? Last edited by SirTeddykins; 11-11-2015 at 06:40 AM. |

| Teeth So happy Teddy did well after the dental. Don't worry about the possible hiding baby teeth, or the murmur. If the vet says nothing to worry about, please don't fret. If he is biting the hard bars of a crate, but he needs to be confined, have you thought of a soft 'crate'. They are round and I really liked them. I think Amazon or E bay has them. There are only soft materials and it would be hard for him to chew. Hope he feels 100% again soon and his gums close up on the loose teeth soon. Just looked under soft pet crates on Amazon and at the bottom of the list is the kind I am talking about. A blue 45" pen. Last edited by dottiesyrky; 11-11-2015 at 07:01 AM. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Glad it is over - and now just keep an eye on him, and you now about the murmur. I also have a soft pen that stays folded up in the car with a washable pee pad. if the babies are with us and need potty, pop it up, and that problem is taken care of. I got the 36" but my guys are pretty tiny. Got mine on Amazon. Would try him in it, because they can roll it over on it's side if they really tried and mine is hard to get just right to old it back to get it in the carry case. (must take some type of a masters degree to get it folded to put away like they do in the ad on you tube)

| Round soft pen I really liked mine and it is good as it has a top and bottom and zippable (new word?) doors. I never had an issue with it being tipped over though. Probably the 45" would be more stable and roomier (for p pad and water etc). I used to put mine in a doorway between two rooms and leave one door unzipped so the small pup could go into the kitchen only. (I took care of a small 12 week old pup for a few weeks!) The little terror got one over me however by squeezing under the floor of the crate to get in the forbidden room!!! As for folding it into the case, ha,ha, I did not find that an easy task at all…but it can be done! Luckily I kept it in one place usually, but it is light and easy to move around the house. |

| Thanks so much for all your help! xxx Teddy is back to his normal, crazy self today. Hubby saw the surgeon and we got some advice re: teeth and his separation anxiety. She told him that Teddy was extremely healthy, well bred and taken care of...yes, I know the latter part, I live and breathe this dog! Thanks all xoxox |
