Our youngest Yorkie has the smelliest feet EVER! It doesn't matter if she's just had a bath and been professionally groomed! What causes this? Is there something we can do to help prevent her "Fritos feet"? Thanks!

Usually, frito feet is caused by some sort of bacteria. One thing you can do is keep the fur between his nails/pads trimmed and making sure his paws are scrubbed. Are you wiping his feet every day?

If it's really bad than I suggest a trip to the vet. There might be an infection.

Joey use to have what some call stinky feet or frito feet, I loved the smell of them! Don't forget dogs sweat through their paws, to reduce the odor trim the hair around the pads and wash the feet more often. Joey lost his stinky feet, and I miss them!

I'm always so jealous of Frito Feet, lol, bc mine have never had it

! It seems like it'd be so cute somehow. I dunno.

Anyway, vet articles out there claim that Frito Feet is actually caused by yeast overgrowth, so your kiddo may have a localized or systemic yeast issue happening...are the ears smelly also, btw? To get rid of yeast, you need an anti-fungal. If you suspect it's systemic, then you may want an oral med from the vet like a round of Diflucan or Nystatin for a couple/few weeks. If you think it's localized, you may want an anti-fungal spray like:

If your little one has smelly feet because of yeast overgrowth, you can maybe consider feeding organic unrefined coconut oil daily. I give my Scottie a lick of it here and there on my fingers - he looooves it as a special treat (it's solid white but melts in your hand).

Coconut oil has been known to help any skin conditions and/or irritations for both humans and dogs. Many articles I've read say it'll boost the dog's immune system, digestive system, and make their hair silky smooth too! I personally believe in it from a holistic point of view. Just make sure to start off with small bit to avoid diarrhea

Oh and as a side note - I always wash Scottie's feet with dog shampoo after walks. He tends to pee all over his hind legs because he misses the ground when he marks :S

When our Bella had frito feet, we did a Betadine foot soak just before her weekly bath, and the the smell went away and never came back. You just put enough Betadine in a small shallow basin of warm water to give it the color of weak iced tea, and let your Yorkie stand in it for two or three minutes. If you're not going to give the dog a bath right afterwards, rinse the betadine solution off the feet gently with warm water.
