| Best food to feed a yorkie puppy Hi! In the past with my other yorkies I have fed them blue buffalo. However I don't know if that really was the best food and feel maybe I should have done more research. The new puppy I am getting has been eating royal canine at the breeders choice. I considered keeping her on it but I read the ingredients and it is made with chicken by product and corn. I'm just so confused and would appreciate any advice on what food would be the best to give her. I just want a happy and healthy yorkie baby. |

| I'm not a breeder and I'm sure there will be some to answer your question. However, I do know that they like for you to keep them on what the breeder is feeding them and I believe a lot of breeders do like the Royal Canine food. I don't know much about that brand of food. My little one was on the Fromm Puppy Gold food until he was one. I never had an issue with it and he loved it. I do know if you switch him it has to be a gradual switch mixed with your old food. IMO you have to do what is best for you and your new puppy. Best of luck!

| Hi there! I think you try to best quality food that fits your budget and what your dog likes to eat. Blue Buffalo is a good food and I've fed that. A friend uses Royal Canin and it works for her dog. Our Emma is currently on Nutri Source Grain Free Chicken Formula. Its what she was on with her breeder. What I like about it is her coat is silky and shiny. Her poops are small, firm and about 2-3 times a day. She's free fed so that makes a difference in the frequency I think. Just do one of those dog food analysis and try something out. Some companies do have samples you can try. Good Luck.

| Yes cat2861 is correct....you want to keep your new pup on what the breeder is feeding for the first couple of weeks. There are a lot of stress or for your baby coming into their new home. And a instant food change will cause tummy upset. Whatever food you choose you want to do a slow transition over a 10 day period after the first two or so weeks. A lot of breeders feed royal canin and do swear by it. Personally like you I'm not a fan of the corn.....but still you want to keep him/her on it at first. There are a lot off good foods that have been recommended to me.....we currently have winnie on Natures variety prairie. Fromm is also highly recommended. I know u will get some more recommendations! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I wouldn't switch the food until your kiddo settles in. I'm not a fan of using a lot of corn either for my kiddos. I'd rather they have excess protein than excess carbs in their diets. I like Primal, Nature's Logic, Solid Gold, Nature's Variety, Wellness, Orijen/Acana.

| If it aint broke, dont "fix" it. If your puppy is doing well, no adverse effects from the food the baby is on when you bring him home, please dont take the only thing left that the baby can identify with....new family, new people, new environment, momma is gone, siblings are no where to be found by puppy....this is enough stress for this baby to try to handle. There is a reason breeders like Royal Canin, and it certainly is NOT because it is cheap! Allow baby at least 4-5 months to get acclimated to this new lifestyle he finds himself in....if he is doing well on RC, you can rest assured, he is getting a scientifically formulated food for his life stage that he will continue to do well with. THEN, after he is settled in well, you can jump on that careening, spinning, revolving search for "the perfect food" that you like for your pup, hoping he likes it too! |

| I would leave her on that food for a few months. I also would not switch to blue buffalo.

| Thank you yorkiemom1 you have a very good point. Since she is doing well on it there really is no reason to change and it what she knows. I definitely will be picking up the same one she is on before I bring her home. lovetodream88 thank you also for your input. I do think it will be the best decision to leave her on it |
