| Poop frequency? Okay so I finally brought home my baby girl, Ellie, this past Friday. When we picked her up the breeder told us "she had a hard poop" and as a result her rear end was a little pink so to check it twice a day. No big deal, I thought. We were sent home with the food she was being fed but she refused to eat the first night so I gave her Nutra Cal. In the middle of that night I woke up to her screaming while trying to have a bowel movement. I switched her to canned food and since then she hasn't had much trouble pooping, but she's only doing it once a day. Is that normal for a 10 week old puppy? She does scoot sometimes after pooping but she is acting normal otherwise. I feel like the painful poop was because of dehydration but now I wonder if the low frequency means constipation? I'd like to avoid a vet bill if possible. Help!!!

| Since you just brought her home, it is advisable to have a vet wellness check anyway. Usually breeders have this in the contract for the health guarantee. I assume she also has more vaccinations that need to be scheduled too. Once a day poop and potential dehydration in a 10 week old puppy would concern me. The smaller and younger they are, the faster they can go down. If she continues to exhibit difficulty when she does eliminate, that is also cause for concern. I re-read your post and see that she is not having difficulty, but not going often.

| Hi maximo, Thanks for the reply! This morning she was straining to go and only had a very small hard stool, followed up 2 minutes later with a large regular stool. She has been eating and drinking fine today. I called the breeder tonight and asked her what her thoughts were and her main concern was that she was eating and drinking like normal. She said if she was constipated she wouldn't be eating because it would have nowhere to go, and to just continue to watch her and make sure she eats. Ellie did have a normal poop at the breeders house while we were there Friday, no difficulty. I wonder if because she is only eating little bites of the Blue Buffalo canned puppy throughout the day that's why she isn't pooping much? I probably sound crazy, I just want to make sure my baby is okay.

| If you got your puppy on Friday then you should have taken her to your vet for her Wellness exam as previously stated. Not to sound harsh but you just bought a puppy and don't want a vet bil. Are you serious? Don't you want to have your puppy seen by your vet to have her checked out? I'm sorry but this is something that really hits a nerve with me. If you cannot afford to provide proper veterinarian care for your puppy, that's not very good with a 10 week old puppy. My dogs have always seen my vet within the first 24 hours of coming home with me. If either of my Yorkies cried while trying to poo I would take them to the vet. |

| First and foremost congrats on Ellie She's a cutie! I have to agree with the posts above, you should definitely take Ellie to get her wellness check it's very important to do so. I understand she seems fine, but we can't see what's going on inside their system. I took Teddy to the vet today and he's been having some bowel problems too. The total was $118 sure it caught me off guard but it was money well spent to make him better because he's my baby and he's worth it. Definitely keep her hydrated, continue giving her some nutri cal, and make sure she's being supervised. |
