| Yorkie with Diarrhea tested negative for parasites My little yorkie is about nine months old and around 3.5 pounds. On Thursday evening she started having some very loose stools. This is very abnormal for her as in the almost seven months I've had her she's only that happen once and it went away after only one time. However, this time the loose stools continued into Friday morning. The vet tested her stool for parasites and the test was negative. They just told me to watch her. Now it has turned into diarrhea and she's not really sleeping. She's up two or three times during the night with diarrhea and it's almost like she's got a cramp stomach because she'll only sleep for an hour or two in between. This is also abnormal as she usually sleeps from 10:30 or 11:00 at night until 6:00 or 7:00 in the morning. She seems to be acting the same and has the same level of excitement. She also definitely still has an appetite and eats her food quickly as soon as I give it to her. Should I be concerned? Is there something I should do? She also got this month's Heart Guard on Wednesday evening….could it be a reaction to that? The vet didn't think so but I feel like anything is a possibility at this point. Thank you! |

| Hello and Welcome to YT! Some parasites are not shed in each BM, so collect a sample each day for 4 days and then have it tested. Keep it in a baggie in the fridge until all samples are taken. But, being a puppy, I wouldn't wait that long if the diarrhea continues. I'd call the vet back and tell him it's getting worse. Many things can cause diarrhea, and it's important not to let it go on for too long bc it will cause dehydration, which by itself is hard to recover from. Make sure she is drinking enough by checking her gums. The gums should be normal color (pink) and moist, not sticky to the touch.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Its not always a parasite, my pups get unset when they eat other animals poo or get into the trash and eat foods they shouldn't. And yes, sometimes medications too, so it could be possible that your pup is having a reaction to the Heart guard med but be sure to ask your vet abut it and do not discontinue it unless you have a back up. I have hear of some people giving the tablet in two parts. One one day the other the following day. Maybe this will help your pup if this is the issue but it is important that she get the entire chew.

| Vet didn't tell you to do anything? I would talk to him about flagyl for a few days to settle her tummy and give her easy to digest rice/chicken or prescription food. Once she is better, ease her back in to her regular food slowly. If it starts again her food isn't agreeing with her. You didn't change her food at all right? It could be something she picked up that irritated her stomach, new food or giardia which doesn't always show in a lab test. |

| Thank you all for the advice! I did call the vet again Saturday morning and they put her on a 12-hour fast followed by a strict boiled chicken and white rice diet until she has solid stools and told me to call them back if she was still having diarrhea after a couple of days. So far she's loving the food and she hasn't had diarrhea for almost 24 hours…but no solid stools either (but the vet said this was normal). She also finally slept last night so I think the rest has done her some good. If the diarrhea comes back I'm sure I'll have more questions. I really appreciate all the help as I'm new to having a puppy and I am frantic whenever something goes wrong! |

| As someone already said there are many causes of diarrhea. If she was wormed properly earlier in her life then she shouldn't have worms now unless she was exposed to something that she could contract them from. Many times dogs can have worms without diarrhea. Vets usually try the chicken and rice diet to give the gut a chance to rest and heal up from whatever the irritation was. Hopefully it was just something she ate. If she does not get back to normal soon I hope your vet will come up with a better idea. |

| Thanks again to everyone for your help. I ended up taking her back to the vet this afternoon because she got pretty sick again this morning. They finally put her on flagyl as well as a special canned food to help with the diarrhea. They also put her on a de-wormer just to be sure since the fecal tests have been coming back negative but she still has diarrhea. Hopefully this will take it! I appreciate all the advice! This forum is quite helpful! |
