| Elevated Enzymes in Blood Work. Hi - I am completely new to YT so please bare with me! I took my 8 month old Yorkie puppy to the vet today to get blood work done before his neuter on Monday. The vet called a few hours later and told me he had elevated enzymes in his blood and they will not be doing the surgery on Monday. They want me to come back in 10 days to get his blood retested to see if its gone down. I know I shouldn't worry, but I am VERY afraid it might be a liver shunt or something very serious. He is so young and he only weighs 3lbs so he is a very small Yorkie. From the time we brought him home from the breeder hes had numerous problems, Kennel cough, ear infection, ringworm. Does anyone have experience with their Yorkies when they were young having liver shunts or highly elevated enzymes in their blood? And is there anything I can do about it now (diet etc.) that can help them go down? I want him to live as long as possible! But, I'm also afraid of how expensive it might become! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

| When we took Toki in for routine blood work, it showed that she had elevated liver enzymes. The vet gave us some Denamarin to help with liver support/function as well as Royal Canin Hepatic while we continued to investigate the cause of these elevated enzymes. We ended up doing a bile acid test, ultrasound, and ultimately scintigraphy at the NCSU vet school to determine if she had a shunt. Turns out she has what we believe to be asymptomatic MVD (we didn't do a biopsy to confirm since she was otherwise healthy and had no issues). She doesn't require a special hepatic diet or any medications although I still like to supplement with milk thistle or Denamarin...that was a year ago and now her liver enzymes are at a normal level (they can fluctuate with MVD of course) and still has no symptoms...it's something that we will monitor a couple times a year but otherwise has not affected Toki. Your poor boy sounds like he's been through a lot. Is he having any other symptoms otherwise? Pups requiring treatment for these liver issues respond well to combinations of medications, hepatic diets, and/or surgery if necessary. Just take it one step at a time...I remember being so overwhelmed in the beginning but we have a lot of members here with pups who have been through similar things that can offer support/advice from their own experiences. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sorry to hear that your little one has elevated enzymes. I would ask your vet which enzymes and what could cause it. Like Toki, my Cali had elevated enzymes and after ultrasound and liver biopsy it was determined she had a very mild case of MVD. That was 8 years ago and she has been fine. She needed no medicine or diet restrictions. I hope his enzymes are just a little out of whack from something minor and will be back to normal when retested.
