Hello,

We BBQ a lot here in CA, I was wondering is it's ok to pass some left over cooked beef ribs or pork ribs to my 7.4lb Yorkie. The bones are 4"-5" long and 3/4"-7/8" thick.. I don't think the dog can break it, worst case I can set aside some before the cook.. just worry about the bacteria in raw food. Any advice is appreciative.

I wouldn't give them cooked bones as cooked bones will splinter into sharp pieces and can be very dangerous. It's safer to give them uncooked, raw, fresh bones to gnaw on.

I give my kiddos RMBs (raw meaty bones) - I use Bison Back Ribs from Whole Foods. My 3 cannot consume / eat / break this type of bone, even though one of them is a very aggressive chewer. The most they can do is gnaw the bits of meat off, and then gnaw on the bone - which is GREAT for cleaning the teeth. I also feed pre-made raw (Primal) and have been for a long time now -- and I've never had any probs w/ raw germs due to the bones or the food.

Cooked bones are highly hazardous to dogs. Raw, meaty bones are better, but still a risk for broken teeth.

No seasoning/BBQ sauce on anything for the dogs -- can be toxic or simply made your dog very sick.

Pork -- I wouldn't, especially with a Yorkie. Potential pancreatitis nightmare.

Beef -- you have to know your dog. My one could not handle it. Be careful of fat.

I wouldn't give seasoned meat or cooked bones.
I do feed the raw version to my dogs and they looooooooooooooooooove it. I buy a rack of pork back ribs and cut them into singulars and pack them in the freezer. I let them chew on the bone for about 1/3 of it and chuck the rest in the bin. They only need 10% bone in their daily diet. The bones are perfect with the ribs because the eat all the meat off and they can hold them in the paws and chew their way down.
The acids in the stomach soften them and out comes wee tiny unstanky poops.

I buy beautiful meaty pork ribs very lovely marbeling and not a load of fat, dogs do require some fat content in their diet, but I do keep an eye on this due to Teegy's two previous bouts of pancreatitis prior to going on raw.
I blame myself for that because I fed him gross fatty treats, before I educated myself properly.

Antlers are so hard they could break teeth that is only my opinion I have no experience with them but i wouldnt take the chance

I used to give Toki antlers and she really loved them. I stopped them though (along with Himalayan chews) because I got freaked out about choking and tooth chipping (she really goes at things and is too aggressive of a chewer for "smaller" and hard chews like that)...I'd also find blood on the antlers from her mouth which was not okay with me. I think it's a personal choice with antlers. I used to but a friend swore her dog broke it's toothed on them and made me swear never to let them chew it again

Max chipped teeth on a Himalayan chew, so I wouldn't dare try an antler with him.

The rule of thumb or raw meaty bones is stay away from weight bearing bones like knuckles and femur. And they also say don't just feed bare bones as it's actually the chewing the meat from the bone that stimulates the dogs mind and helps to clean their teeth. My two are just finishing up their pork back ribs.
