| Best dog food for Yorkie prone to bladder stones Hey all! I posted this same topic the other day and I got one response asking what type of kidney stone Tobie had but I wasn't sure so I had to call my vet. Tobie had a bladder/kidney stone surgically removed about a month ago. The vet had us get Purina NF Kidney Function dog food but I was wondering if there is a better food out there for him. The type of stone he had was "Calcium Oxalate". We were told to start giving him distilled water which we have been doing. Any suggestions on a healthy dog food that's good for dogs prone to bladder stones is greatly appreciated!

| For Calcium Oxalate stones, you need to prevent spinach, green beans, beets, any high oxalate foods. You'll need to pick a food that is low in phosphorus, not necessarily low in protein, if it's a high quality protein w/low ash, then it should be fine. You can add omega 3 fatty acid oil for optimum kidney function (although someone said there's no proof of that). You might also want to add moisture to his diet by adding hot water to soak the kibble. It will dilute the urine. Diluted urine will keep the crystals from forming. You can also add some canned food if your dog prefers it that way. Periodic urinalysis is needed. This is what I do for my 2 that had struvite crystals, it has not come back. RX diets are specially formulated & scientifically tested, but it's not always needed in case of stones. But if it's a recurring problem even after the diet change, then RX diets might be the best route or an option to try. | Hi I am Holly...A pet herbalist for Chinese medicine. First of all processed foods lack enzymes. First step get high quality enzymes to help digest the food. Bladder Stones are considered Damp-Heat in my world...and I tell everyone..fresh food is best...if that can't happen, make sure you have the enzymes and a high quality food grain free. By the way, once a dog forms stones, chances are that it will happen again. There are remedies that help prevent this. I am lurking here..because I have so many Yorkie customers...I wish more people understood about diet and the roll it plays. |

| I'm late to this thread but our Baci was first diagnosed with Calcium Oxalate bladder stones in February. He had surgery to remove them only to have a reoccurrence this past August (6 months later!) We took him to a specialist here in Los Angeles and of course they put him on the Science Diet U/D and he HATED IT! He ate it for 2 days and became constipated, bloated, anxious and nervous. He stopped eating after those 2 days and proceeded to chew his paws, eat paper, twigs, leaves, dirt and wood. So we called the specialists and they told us to switch him to Royal Canin S/O and he loves it! We went back for a recheck a couple of weeks ago and the ultrasound showed NO stones but the urinalysis did show crystals! We are at our wits end and would love to know if there are any supplements, vitamins, or "extras" that we can add to his food that might help in not allowing those crystals to form stones. We changed him over to distilled water and he is drinking MUCH more water now than in the past. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide. |
