Raw diet for new puppy?

For the last few years of my old poodles life I fed her raw (and she lived a much healthier, happier, seizure free life). So, I would like to feed my new puppy raw also. I know puppies have different nutritional needs than older dogs, is there anywhere I can look up what to feed him? I have a local raw distributor that I used for my old girl, she makes some great grinds. It has meat, organ, bone and veggies. Is this suitable for a puppy? I know he needs bones to chew on, he will get chicken legs and chicken or duck necks (I raise them). I'm just worried the grind will not be nutritionally complete for a growing puppy. What are your thoughts?

You could go to Primal's or Nature's Variety's website and look up their feeding calculator - that would give you some place to start.

i thought it was best to wait for the puppy to be one year old prior to putting on raw diet from what i read but i could be wrong maybe just double check with your vet to be safe.

I think I will disagree with waiting one year. I can give the puppy better food, more nutrition and no poisons with raw. I'm not sure how to start, but I will find out before I get him. My ole poodle was being slowly poisoned her whole life. I don't believe there is a kibble out there that is nutritionally complete for any dog or puppy. Dogs septics are not made to digest grain or cooked kibble, this I know for sure. If I could do it over, I would have fed my first dog raw and not had all the years of health issues that I had. I have lots of time on my hands, I will figure it out.

Thank you for the links. I just wish I were smart enough to use them (sadly I am not). I do know that I have to feed 10% of the pups body weight and divide that into 3 or 4 small meals a day. I also have nutrical on hand in case of hypoglycemia attack. I talked to my raw distributor and she said she has a company that is making a suppliment that she will sell along with the raw grind that will make it more complete. Even without the vitamins, I believe raw is much better than any kibble. It is a constant worry, but so much more rewarding than worrying about what is in the kibble.

I was just wondering, since puppies need more calcium in their diet, do they need to be supplemented, or do they get enough from the raw food?

Good question. I will look around and find out. I think they will get enough from the grind, and mine will also be eating chicken wings, legs and necks. I also have ground bone supplement. I don't think you really need it as long as the pup is eating the grind and maybe neckbones well? Just watch the poop, if it is dry and crumbly=too much bone, loose=not enough bone. Like I said, I'm not exactly sure. My ole girl was 16 and I was only doing this for less than 2 years. It will be a learning experience with Boomer. If all doesn't seem to be going well (and I will will be watching him carefully) then I will change his diet. I think I have enough to keep him healthy. My only reservation is he is such a small puppy and my poodle was almost 10lbs. So, never fed a puppy, but we will learn together along with this great forum!
