Hopefully one of the great breeders on here can help you with your question.

I'm by no means an expert here. I've had lab puppies in the past and they all seem to have opened their eyes at around 10 - 14 days. Mollies babies were a little older when they opened their's. I don't know if with a smaller breed it takes a few days longer or if it just depends on each individual dog.

First of all, have the eyes started thinning or getting little slits in the inner parts of the eyes? If not, contact your vet...otherwise,

Try taking a cotton ball dipped in warm water, remove excess water and gently wipe over the puppies eyes. Maybe do this twice a day and check the next day to see if anything has started opening. This can be repeated over a couple of days.

Tinies have a tendency to do everything later.

Out of my current litter...13 days old, the big girl opened both eyes yesterday, boy has one eye partially opened and the little girl is showing no signs yet.

Thank you for the info on the eye wash, I have raised maltese for years and never have I seen anything like this, yes you can see where the slits should be,but nothing as far as opening...I know when they took him,he was a premee,he had no hair and looked like a skinny old pointed nose old man,now he is fat and lazy, ears are forming but no eyes,I will wash with cotton ball when I get home from work, should I use water or boric acid?

I'd use just water. Have you called your vet about this?

I missed this post last night! It common for preemies to have delayed eye and ear developement. I have heard of some preemies whose eyes remained closed for up to 25 days. IMPORTANT: Protect his eyes from bright light or camera flashes until he is older he needs subdued lighting.

<<<<<< I know when they took him,he was a premee,he had no hair and looked like a skinny old pointed nose old man,now he is fat and lazy, ears are forming but no eyes,I will wash with cotton ball when I get home from work, should I use water or boric acid?>>>>>>>snip

You are so lucky this wee one survived. (IMO) It is very difficult to raise a preemie toy dog. It's a miracle his lungs expanded and began to work a true miracle! Please be aware his development stages may be far behind a normal puppy. This would be most important during his weaning process. He may be so arrested in his development that he cannot digest food at the normal weaning period. Just be aware that's all. Good luck. I love hearing of miracle stories like this!

Me again. May I asked why the mom had a c-section? If she only had one preemie puppy was there some other medical condition which required the c-section? JUst curious and always learning! <G>

Mom and dad were bad teenagers,I had no intention of breeding for at least another year, had her in panties, him in a belly band,my daughter came over and let them out togeather in the back yard, they were both 1 year old,and you know what happened after he took off her panties and she helped him out of his belly band..yep, she got pregnant, there was only one puppy and my vet who I trust thought it would be better to do a c section sence we knew the date they got togeather, but she must have gotten pregnant after the date we knew, the baby was too big to pass, he weighed 5.5 oz,and the vet said he should have weighed about 3 oz...but when he was born he looked like any premmie human baby i have ever seen...he is a fat thing now, looks like he is really a rotty puppy, not a yorkie,he is half the size of mommy, and looks so funny nursing on her,his ears are slowly becomming real ears...yes, I do keep them in a dark room, actually in the closet is where she wanted her bed and he is doing great now the vet says....I am still wondering if he can really be the same size as his parents when full grown, they both weigh 5 lbs,but he is huge now compared to her..he takes from her front arm pit to her tail, but the vet said he will mellow the growing out in time...any ideas as to if it is truth about size of parents, all of the dogs on both sides are 3-5 lbs full grown for 5 generations

Thanks! Please Please do not take this the wrong way. BUT I just knew it was probably a vet screwing with nature! I've seen this happen before whereby the vet makes a GUESS that the cookies are done cooking. Then when the momma is open it's too late to turn back the clock. I realize your vet make this decision in the best interest of the Yorkie bitch. BUT I just wanted this information out there for others to see. Many vets will make the decision to c-section because they do not want to come into the clinic in the middle of the night. Trust me I have seen this more than once as I am the one (an experienced breeder) who gets the telephone calls to SAVE the preemie puppies. There is I would guess a 50% or greater loss of the litters. Yes we always lose one or two or more of the puppies. It just disturbs me that's all.

Well on to your girl. THAT IS ONE HUGE PUPPY to be a preemie at birth. Your vet probably did make the correct decision. No telling what he would have weighed at full term. He could have been 5 to 6 days premature as it is the last 5 days which the coat grows. That is right on the edge on non survival because the lungs cannot support life.

<<<<<I am still wondering if he can really be the same size as his parents when full grown, they both weigh 5 lbs,but he is huge now compared to her..he takes from her front arm pit to her tail, but the vet said he will mellow the growing out in time...any ideas as to if it is truth about size of parents, all of the dogs on both sides are 3-5 lbs full grown for 5 generations>>>>snip

You don't say how much he weighs now. But I'm guessing he is rather large. <g> Here's a story. I once had a female who grew 4 to 5 times faster than her littermates. I used to pray for her to stop growing! At 12 weeks she weighed FIVE pounds. She was nearly as big as her 5 1/2 lb dam. At 6 months she weighed 13 pounds. And yes she came from 4 to 5 generations of normal 5 to 7 pound individuals with an occassional tiny in the group. Where she came from I haven't a clue! She had a wonderful personnality and beautiful dark blue coat. But I had given up all hope of placing her in a home. NO one and I mean no one wanted this moose! Then one day got a call....family wanted a BIGGER Yorkie. Boy I just said do I have a deal for you! LOL It was a grand match, they thought she was perfect! My "moose" is living in and has total control of a million dollar home today. Yep she lives like a queen. She is a true cinderalla story. LOL Oh and has coat to the floor. She is magnificant to look at. Oh but she weighs 23 pounds today!!! I still haven't a clue as to exactly where she came from.

Embarassed update

I guess I am a real worry wart, both eyes are open,he acts just like a normal puppy,he is doing just fine, mom is taking more intrest, she has always feed and cleaned the bottom, but now is trying to play with him also, daddy dog is now allowed to look at him in the same room, before her attitude was get outa here,he wasn't even allowed in the hall to the bedroom, now its all changed, my what 48 hours can do,lol, but the big lesson learned was that just because I have bread other dogs, and my intentions were to wait untill they were 2 years old, I am going to get the male fixed, the more I learn the more I really don't know, but then again is that not life in general...as much as we love our male, he has 2 flaws, his coat is not as long as I want, and his ears are a hair to long,so we will fix and love..I guess what I am trying to say is why allow a dog to breed if you are taking a chance that you might get a couple that are not akc standard,if I descide to breed for sure, I will buy a perfect male...I am not into it for money, but cant seem to allow myself to bring into the world puppies that dont quite meet the standard, if I had been able to keep them apart,it would have been better, but such is life, sence I don't know how this baby will turn out,I am not going to regester him with akc....but he will make a wonderful pet
