| What do you guys think about neutering? I love my little Haik and he's my first dog and I recently started watching Cesar Millan's "Mastering Leadership" Series and he suggest you should neuter your dogs. Also, my Yorkie is now 7 months old and he's humping everything, should I neuter him? I find it a bit uncanny but that's maybe because I look at him as a human, which is a mistake as far as I see... |

| Hi, Welcome to YT. SHOULD I GET MY YORKIE FIXED ? Answer: I have been a stanch advocate of spay and neuter for a very long time. I work with rescued dogs, abandoned dogs and strays. I have seen the results of too many unwanted dogs. I also firmly believe dogs are calmer, less territorial, less aggressive, and can avoid some serious diseases and cancers simply by being spayed or neutered. It is my opinion they are happier and being a pet, than active breeding dogs. Intact dogs are always looking for that next mate and worried about rivals. The only thing that has changed in my reasoning, is when Yorkies are sterilized. My Vet specializes in breeding, and fertility. She is one of the countries most respected frozen sperm and AI experts pertaining to show dogs. She has given me research data and information that concludes, there are advantages in spaying and neutering AFTER dogs reaches sexual maturity. With most Yorkies sexual maturity is between eight months and one year of age. So my answer is, Yes Spay or Neuter your Yorkie.

| Both my boys are neutered. Chase was about 6 months old, and Calvin was 9-10 months old when I got them neutered. It's a good idea, and I see it as the responsible thing to do for their health! |

| I am in favor of neutering. The pros far outweigh the cons in my opinion. Both of my boys are neutered. The only thing I would have done differently is waited until Max was at least 7 - 8 months old, rather than 6 months old. There are studies that conclude that there are health benefits to not doing it while the dog is still developing.

| I say definitely neuter...... but depending on his size is how I would decide when to have it done. Both Seymour & Seeger were neuter about 9-10 months old. I waited a bit longer because I just didn't feel comfortable with the surgery until they were bigger, older, & stronger. This is definitely something every dog owner needs to consider..... and there are also many health issues that can come along with an un-neutered boy as he gets older. Good Luck to ya!

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | At this point in Time Opinions can change and should change as more recent research comes in. In this case the question of "when or IF EVER to spay/neuter your dogs". There is a preponderance of evidence that suggests "early" neutering as defined by neutering prior to boney growth plate closure does not provide health benefits; in fact it provides for many health risks and conditions that could be avoided and or minimized if one only waited until the growth plates close. Here is one link that talks about this subject and also provides the research references. Canine Sports Productions: Early Spay-Neuter Considerations for the Canine Athlete I believe that the dog owners should seriously weigh the health benefits versus risks to early neutering or neutering at all; AGAINST their commitment to insure no unwanted breeding occurs. Behavioural considerations of neutered versus un-neutered males? Research seems to indicate NO aggression reduction in neutering. In fact the opposite appears to happen. Marking inside is a behaviour that with time and dedication to train out of the male is definitely possible. I believe that for most dog owners neutering or spaying after growth plate closure would represent a good compromise, between health benefits and providing for you an ease of life with your pet. That is to say you don't need to worry about inadvertent breeding as your pet will be neutered after 12 or so months old.

| I think all pet owners should spay and neuter there pets so yes I think you should have him neutered. I have heard some crazy story's about what male dogs will do to get to a female in heat and have gotten very hurt. Also if a dog is not fixed some people will steal them and use them for breeders or sell them.

| I guess I will neuter my Yorkie soon, he is 7 months and 14 days old. Is the procedure really that ugly? I already got my Yorkie to the vet once since his puppy teeth were overlapping with the normal teeth and he had to be sedated completely |

| It's less invasive as say a spay. But for neuter or spays, most pups bounce back quickly. Which is the hardest part. They want to run around and play like nothing happened, and your suppose to keep them calm. there are things everyone should do to help their babies along at this time. Pre-op blood work can help let you know your baby is healthy enough to safely go through surgery.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Definitely neuter, the number one cause of death in unneutered dogs is death from injuries due to car accidents, and a Yorkie is much of a match for a car. Unneutered males are much more likely to run away than neutered males and can smell a bitch in heat over ten miles away. This makes them agitated and they will take any opportunity they can to try and find her. I believe now is a good time to neuter, before marking is firmly established. Also, most Yorkies have to have some of their baby teeth removed and at 7-8 months most dogs have enough adult teeth so that baby teeth can be removed. This has to be done under anesthesia, so it’s best to do it while they are being neutered. Joey humped some of his toys until about a month after his neuter, the humping isn’t a bad thing, it can help the testicles to drop.

I have neighbors with corgie, poodle and american cocker. All turns more aggressive after sterile. So calmer dogs after sterile are very individual and the myth has been busted in my neighborhood. The corgie used to love playing with dogs, now he cant stand dogs around him. The poodle started barking at any human walking near her, doesnt seems to bother her much previously. American cocker used to play with my westie. now he seems wary of him for whatever reason. All this truly happened overnight right after the operation. So think about it before u do it.

Three dogs all turned nasty in a short amount of time? Sounds like something the owner is doing in terms of how they socialize/ raise their dogs. Mot likely the cause is 100% the owner's fault, not sterilizing the dogs. There is noting that can change a dog's personality overnight short of some sort of lobotomy.
