| puppy not eating! my mother and I just got a new yorkie puppy. He was eating fine at home (so the breeder said) but now he will NOT eat his kibble. he will eat anything else BUT his kibble. He was on royal canin but we tried him with acana. he seems to like it better. he won't eat his kibble out of a bowl. we have to put it in a puppy kong. he will eat home made food though, and he'll gobble it up like he hasn't eaten in days! he is very hungry but refuses kibble!! any advice? we've spoken to the breeder but I want your input on this issue. should I just put him on home made dog food? he is only 14 weeks. |

well this is just my opinion but i would not feed a 14 week old puppy homeade diet unless you you consult with a pet nutritionist and get a diet specifically tailored to your puppy. Growing puppies need lots of nutrients for growing bones and developing organs... . I think the reason he is not eating well now is his feeding has not been consistent.. what did the breeder tell you to do? maybe you could put some warm water on the acana puppy kibble and see if he likes that better...

| Hmm...if the bowl is the issue, you might try using a plate or even a little place mat to feed him off of. Toki prefers to eat out of shallow, flat dishes as opposed to a bowl. If it's the kibble, it may be too big? Maybe you can add warm water or mix in just enough canned food to coat the kibble to make it more enticing. Or if he's eating an entire meal's worth of kibble from his KONG, I'd continue to do that (we used to occasionally give Toki her meals in a Kong with some frozen canned food smeared on the opening side...she really enjoyed interacting with it and knocking the kibbles out to eat). I would also try to stick with a kibble as that will have complete nutrition for your pup. |

Thing is, I think most of us have been there....we get our new Littlie home and they're all out of sorts - everything's new. So they don't eat properly, so we start switching and trying new stuff - and everything gets in a muddle. Home-cooking's fine - when they're older, and when you can control it all properly. Have you tried warm water on his food? I wonder if you've tried putting it on a plate or a tile - for instance Harry HATED stainless steel bowls What did your breeder advise you to do? And by the way, welcome to YT - and congratulations on your new Littlie! Sally + Harry x

| You can always finely chop some boiled chicken and mix a little in with the kibble....mix a little of the broth from the boiled chicken over the kibble...that may make it more appealing to him....They will usually go off feeding for a day or two as they acclimate to their new home...if he was indeed eating his RC kibble....is it the RC Puppy kibble?...he should go back to eating it without any problem....I dont recommend switching all over the place with all different food at this stage...it will confuse hm and make for a REALLY picky eater...stick with whatever the breeder had him on...add a little finely chopped boiled chicken and softened with the chicken broth, and he will come around after he settles in...continue to put the kibble in his kong toy, especially if he eats it from there! |
