| Acana Users Has anyone noticed a difference with the new formula? Peanut is still pretty itchy, I know it has something to do with the food!! I bought a new bag and it seems the kibble is thinner-

| I'm not having an problems with Acana, and the kibble doesn't look any different to me. But just because mine don't have a problem with it, that doesn't mean that yours will be OK on it too. It's a very individual thing. However, you say he "is still pretty itchy." How long ago did you switch? It can take up to a month for the ingredient(s) that cause the allergy to completely leave their system. And, according to my vet, most allergies in dogs are not from food ingredients, they are environmental, like pollen. I would go to a dermatologist / allergist to see if they can nail down what is causing the reaction, so that you can stop guessing on the food, since it might not be food related at all.

I know for a fact it is the food- He has been on Acana for over 3 years and we have never had any problems. Then I was a dingbat and switched him to the Acana duck and Pear, I know that food has the Oat- He started itching like crazy, I took him off and bought a new bag of Acana Ranchland, I heard they switched the formula- Also the bag I bought the kibble is way thinner than what it has been. He is still itching like crazy! He doesn’t have fleas and he hardly is in the grass and outside. I know it is the food- Also I think your Vet gave you wrong information, I know a lot of allergies dog’s have start from the food… I know he is allergic to something in the Acana.

| I have yet to try the new formula of Acana. Jackson just finished up his bag of the old formula, with no issues. Instead of buying a bag of the new food though, we are trying out Canine Caviar. He's always done best on Acana but now I'm nervous- I hate when these companies go and make new formulas! Food allergies actually aren't super common though. Environmental allergies definitely are a lot more. Actually, to pinpoint an allergy, a food has to be fed for 12 weeks and NOTHING else. So for example, if you switch him to Brothers, you have to give it at least 12 weeks for any past allergies to essentially go away and see if the food really was the culprit. Intolerances can be noticed almost immediately a lot of times... but apparently the effects of the food allergy can linger on for weeks, even after switching to a new food. If that makes sense. Really, it's nearly impossible to pinpoint the culprit in a diet consisting of 20-50+ ingredients. It might even be a combination of ingredients that work together. Who really knows for sure? I hope you find some relief for Peanut tho!

| Are you all talking about the Acana Grain Free or the Acana Singles (like Pear n Duck, Lamb n Apple)?

| The Acana grainfrees recently had a formula change (also decreased bag size, and increased price). The Singles line did not, as far as I know. But I think the OP bought a bag of the duck & pear (singles line), and Pnut had a reaction, so she went back to grain-free Acana, but now their formula is different than what it was before. Thus the problem still being itchy.

| Well, as you know, I got a new bag of Acana Wild Prairie and was not liking what I was seeing with Riley with it..... We have always had excellent results with Acana but with this last bag, he started getting small dark circular dry patches on his tummy.... these could also be environmental, but it seems when I feed him only his NV raw, it clears up.... I have been feeding only the Acana, kibble and they started getting worse... [as you saw in the pic. I texted to you...] I bought a bag of Canine Caviar and his tummy is clearing up, once again. I have only been feeding it for about 4-days now but I am really liking what I am seeing. I know I need to have him on it for a while before I can get true results, but so far, so good!! Note: He also Screeches when he sees me pouring the kibble, which he has Never done on kibble, before. He has done that with RAW but Never Kibble. I am assuming that means that he likes it!! With this last bag of Acana, I having to entice him to eat it, or hand feed him. He would literally sniff it and walk away. I had to take Riley to the vet after feeding him two different formulas of FROMM and him breaking out with bad ear infections, bad running eyes.... not just eye gunk but liquid running down both cheeks; and baaaaad silent but deadly gas [enough to clear a room]... the vet concluded that it was more than likely a reaction to the grains in it. We went back to the grain free Acana and all symptoms Disappeared and he was doing Great until this last/new bag that I bought. I'm just hoping Riley Continues Doing Well On The Canine Caviar. Hoping Peanut gets some relief very very SOON!!! xoxo Last edited by RileyDC; 08-06-2012 at 10:42 AM. |

| Food Allergies and Food Intolerance Food Allergies & Food Intolerance in Dogs Food allergies account for about 10% of all the allergies seen in dogs. It is the third most common cause after flea bite allergies and atopy (inhalant allergies) Food allergies generally account for 20% of the causes of itching and scratching in dogs. Food allergies plus atopy account for another 20%. |
