| Tick questions Ok I have some tick questions. Callie had a tick on her the other night it was a female lone star tick (I looked it up to find out what kind it was) then the next night she had another of the same type. Its still two weeks until time to treat her again for fleas and ticks and the ticks had latched in but were dead when I found them. Neither spot looks red or infected and one is almost completely gone but could she still get sick and neither bite look infected? I am just wondering because she seems tired again and seems to be getting cold really easy more then normal which to me is strange because shes very fluffy right now and normally doesn't get as cold when she is in need for a groom. Sometimes she seems great and other times she seems sleepy and cold. What do I need to be looking for? Can a tick spread illness if they latch in but then die? I know I worry like a crazy amount but any info would help greatly. We have had years that ticks where crazy bad but she never seemed to ever get icky feeling after them. She also is not very tiny she is 16 pounds.

| I mean, I wouldn't worry. She's on the Advantix, right? Anything that was on probably was dead before it was too much in there. Plus it takes 24-48 hours, I believe, for a tick to spread anything. Also, stuff like lymes won't even show up for months. When Jackson came up limping from lymes, vet said it was most likely from a tick from months and months before. He tests negative now for lymes so I guess it's cleared up. But even a positive test doesn't even necessarily mean they HAVE lymes. It's confusing.

| Usually if a tick is carrying Lyme the bite area will have a ring around it that will stay for a couple of weeks. I think it is the deer tick that carries Lyme but not sure. Other than Lyme the only other thing you would watch for is a topical infection. It doesn't sound like she has one. Hard ticks have three different life cycles. They start out as a larva then nymph and then adult. They look a little different at each stage but basically look like a small spider at every stage. So gross! CDC - Tick Life Cycle and Hosts - Ticks We purchased Frontline Plus for our cats last year and the ticks seemed to love the stuff so if your ticks were dead at least what ever you are using is killing them. |

| Thanks everyone. She is on Advantix and I am happy it is at least killing the ticks but we haven't had any sense the two but my grandpa is gonna treat the yard maybe next week and I will take Callie out and about for the whole day so I can make sure that the yard is very dry when she gets on it. I also need to get her groomed she is so crazy fluffy right now its a little harder doing the tick check lol.

| It is the deer that carries the tick that causes lyme disease. Hosts for deer tick also include certain mice. I'd call your vet and just see whether they think you need to bring her in. We have this issue here and knock on wood I've never pulled a tick off any of my dogs. However, if she's on meds, then the tick probably would die before it has had ample time to stay attached to transmit the disease, although I know of two people whose dogs got lyme disease while on prevention AND were vaccinated. To my knowledge, lone star ticks are not vectors of lyme disease.

| Ticks have to be actively feeding on the dog for 24 hours in order to transmit the disease. The topicals kill the ticks only after they bite the dog. It sounds like she may be coming down with something, and may be running a fever on and off. Is she eating and drinking normally? Or maybe feeling the heat from this crazy weather..... It takes two weeks after a tick bite to develope the disease to have it tested... but if she continues not acting right, maybe best to have your vet examine her.

| I use a flea comb on my pets when they come in from outside. If there are any loose ticks on them the flea comb will pick them up. Sometimes the cats already have some attached ticks but at least I can get the ones that have not latched on before they bite or get loose in the house! |
