| Kenzie's spay is happening tomorrow... questions. Hi there, So the day has finally arrived, tomorrow at 10 Kenzie's spay is happening... And with that, we are a nervous wreck, some people say it's good for dogs to have it done, some says it's not. Some say it'll change Kenzie's feisty and mischievous personality, that she'll gain weight... I'm so confused since I want the best for her, I want her to have a very long and healthy life. Could you please share your thoughts about this with me? I'd really appreciate it. She's on Royal Canin 28 for Yorkies and doing great, do we have to switch food after the spay? Its just that she's so tiny, and she's a member of the family, we want the best for her. PS: the people who say that having her spayed is just to satisfy our selfish needs have been pressuring us to not do it :/

| My Jilly was spayed and it changed nothing about her personality. I've heard that dogs that are allowed to get fat after spaying can become sluggish and lazy but I think that has more to do with the weight causing them not to feel like or even really want to play. My Tibbe who is a male was neutered and I know it changed nothing about him either. He was a little toot before and he's a little toot now. I pray the surgery goes uneventfully and she has a comfortable post-op period. I had Jilly spayed to help prevent cancer and Tibbe to avoid the constant yearning some males have to mate, causing frustration.

| I've had all my girls spayed... Previous little girl spayed as a puppy (she was tiny, only 4lbs as an adult). Tillie and Bella were 2-1/2yrs (Bella had one litter, Tillie had none). I didn't notice any changes in any of their behavior, activity, or weight as a result.

| Spaying is best for her it lessens her risks of certain caners and health risks. You don't have to feed her something different. Callie was spayed around 9 months and it did not change her and she did not gain weight.

| I didn't have any problem after having Delilah spayed. Her personality didn't change one big and she is happy and healthy. People say that when you spay, dogs get fat and lazy. That is NOT true. My little girl is 5 1/2 pounds, runs, jumps, plays, and chases after squirrels. You shouldn't have to change any of her food or anything. Just be careful about letting her jump off of furniture for a while. Make sure she is comfortable after the surgery and if she needs it, use an e collar. I didn't use one... I just put Delilah in a preemie onesie. Pray everything goes well!

| Hello there, So Day 1 of post-op was okay, she peed at midnight after having a teaspoon or two of water and Pedialyte. She was walking by herself but we didn't let her for too long, she had some kibble at 6pm, and was sleepy for the rest of the day. The vet send her home in a pet taxi/carrier, we thought it's nice of him to do that, he wanted her to be comfy and to have a speedy recovery. He didn't intubate her, he used IV anesthesia according to her weight. Kenzie is a trooper, she came out of it very fast, the vet was okay with us taking her home to take care of her. We have to go for the check up til Sunday. My question is: When will it be okay for her to take a bath? How long til she gets back to normal (100%)? Can I give her treats now? Thanks again! PS: Sorry if I'm asking to many questions, but she's the first pup we've spayed and everything is a first.

ZoE was bathed the day before her spay. She had sewn stitches that had to be taken out a week after and then a few days after that she had a bath (prolly 10-11 days after spay). She was completely back to her normal self 3-4 days after spay. I'm glad to hear Kenzie's spay went well. She should be back to her fiesty self in a couple of days.

| Lola is getting spayed on dec. 2. she is going to be almost 7 months at that point. has not had a heat cycle yet. i am spaying her for whati believe to be health concerns, i read so oftern that spaying helps to prevent cancers. plus i shouldnt even consider breeding her bc i dont know what i woudl even be doing and no need ot have puppies who need homes when people can go to shelters for them. i am not in any capacity to have her bred so i think it best to have her fixed. how is your pup doing?? any tips? |

| Hi Lola's mom! My Kenzie is back to her hyper-feisty self and it's been less than 48 hours since her surgery. I was scared as she's just 4lbs but she did great! She's spayed at 12pm, and we brought her back home at 3pm, she's trembling a bit but it's a normal reaction to anesthesia, it stopped when she got in the car. Poor baby, my mom was on the phone at 6pm while taking care of her (she's sleepy), but little thing woke up and went to lay on my mom's lap. At 7.30ish, she ate some kibble, didn't want water yet. She drank some at midnight along with some drops of Pedialyte. She peed like an hour later and went back to sleep. By 6am, she's back to normal! She woke up wanting her breakfast, and we also gave her the antibiotic the doctor sent for her to have for 7 days. Lola will do okay, these little ones are troopers. And you're right, by doing this we prevent illnesses and also help unborn pups to come to this world to suffer. P.S: Is it normal if she hasn't gone potty yet? Gave her pumpkin and nothing yet.

| Actually, we didn't buy anything in advance. Just pumpkin to help her do her business and Pedialyte. Its after the surgery that her vet prescribe her Bactrim (antibiotic) and no 'cone of shame' for her. She'll have her post-op check up on Sunday, but he told us to call him if we had any questions, even if its 1am. She's been good since she isn't messing with the stitches at all, in fact, she's playful and didn't lose her appetite. She starts to run, and that's when we panic, but she's back to normal and its been 3 days.

| You were asking how long to give a bath. My vet wouldn't let us give either of ours a bath for a week. I would check with your vet to make sure what he or she says though. My youngest one had a little diarhea and got a little on her fur the night after surgery and when I called my vet, he told me to put vaseline on the incision site and wash just the area that needed a bath and try to avoid getting the incision site wet. My baby girls were pretty much back to acting their normal self within a few days except we had to make sure they didn't get onto anything to jump off for fear of opening up the wound and we tried to keep them still and quiet. My oldest yorkie had to wear an e-collar because she kept trying to chew on her wound. I love the idea of the other poster using a onesie. That is a great idea! My younger Yorkie didn't offer to lick or bother her incision site, but we had her spay done with laser and she had a little bit of a burn a couple days or so after surgery and he had us put aloe on it. Both of my Yorkies only gained about a pound or so after surgery, but they were both about 6 months old at surgery and probably would have gained that much anyway, so the surgery hasn't made them gain weight. I hope your baby girl does well after her surgery. Both of mine did great. PS. Just read your post where you said she is doing well! YAY!!!! Last edited by YorkiesRGrrreat; 11-17-2011 at 01:46 PM. |
