| Shots Callie is due for her yearly check up and tests as well as shots at the beginning of September Rabies being one of them. I thought I heard that the Rabies shot should be given at a different time then any other shots is that true? Also what would you consider to many shots at one time for a 16 pound yorkie?

| Yearly shots are a thing of the past. I would never give yearly shots and most veterinarians follow the AAHA of every 3 years. Rabies in MD is only required every 3yrs. The "3 year vaccine" is the same thing as the "1 year vaccine" so don't be tricked into thinking it's two different things. I really like Dr. Dodd's vaccine protocol. W Jean Dodds Vaccine Protocol VACCINATION PROTOCOLS Jackson got his puppy shots (DHPP at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks, then Rabies) and then his yearly booster of DHPP and rabies (on different days) and I am still unsure if I will ever be giving him another round of DHPP for the rest of his life. I will be giving him rabies every 3yrs to oblige to the law. Vet told me his DHPP was good for 3yrs so technically he will be "due" when he turns 4 but I haven't decided if I'll be giving it to him again or not. Leaning towards not. The only "unnecessary" vaccine I give is bordatella because he's gotten kennel cough twice and it's annoying, even though treated pretty easily. And both times he's gotten it the bordatella (up the nose spray) was "expired" so I think I will keep up with that one.

| I would not allow any one of my pups to have more than one shot at a time. My vet recommends a three week period in between shots. 16 pounds is not a big dog...

| Also, just so you know, a dog can have a reaction to a shot even IF he/she did not have a reaction to it previously. So, don't assume that she absolutely will not have a reaction to the Lepto the second time. As for Lepto, unless there is a real problem in your area, I don't know that I would be giving it. There might be a problem there...I have no idea, but that would be the only reason to give it imo.

| Just got Dudley's yearly vaccines and they spred them out over 3 weeks. He did fine. Also my vet said they were going to the Bordetella shot instead of the spray because of problems. I was so glad because for a few years now I have asked them to do the shot not he spray because mine had problems afterward. Your baby weighing 16lbs. should not have any problems. Dudley is 4lbs. and thats why we had them spred out the shots, which they were going to do anyway I think. Bless you and your baby and let us know how it went. |

| My vet is separating vaccines even in large breed dogs. My vet follows the AAHA guidelines as well. Lepto is prevalent in our area, but I decided to discontinue giving it to my older dogs and my youngest dog has never had it. Your vet will know if lepto is prevalent in your area. Ask what strains of lepto your vet is seeing, and if the vaccine covers those particular strains because it does not cover all of them.

| Wow there are so many different shots its almost confusing. I am going to ask the vet I want to use what is prevalent in my area that is outside of the DHPP shot. I know bordetella is one I will need being in the city. |

| Yup, DAP every 3 years (generally). Rabies every 3 Jyears (usually). Lepto, bordatella, and lyme yearly (but 3 non-core vaccines is a ton). No way should all of these be given on the same day. However, if you split them all up, that is 5 vet trips. IMO, 5 vet trips for vaccines is really extreme. Any vet would have the right to get frustrated if asked to do it this way. If they don't charge you for an office call everytime, then they have to keep losing their tech for this. Next year it will be better bc just the non-core would be needed. JMHO, I would try to eliminate at least one non-core vaccine from her life. I'd also split them up, but I'd be willing to give more than one per visit. It might be better to give them all separately, but so many vets still give them together and aren't having problems with it. Not suggesting that you should do like some do and give them all at once, but there is probably a more middle of the road approach, esp. with so many non-cores to fit in.

| If I were to pair anything...I would do it with the rabies. I have never had a problem with rabies. Just my thoughts...
