Donating YT 30K Club Member | To make sure they are healthy enough to be put under. My understanding is that you want to be sure there kidneys and liver are functioning properly so they can safely be put under and clear the anesthesia from their systems. I always have the bloodwork done prior to any procedure. It is the best investment you can make.

| They also look at white blood cell counts, which is what helps fight infections. If it's low, I wouldn't be allowing surgery (and they shouldn't be doing it unless an emergency)

| The vet needs a look at what is going on to be able to decide if and when anesthesia can be used (and which types). The liver and kidneys can be assessed along with electrolyes, blood cells, etc. For instance, if there is a concern over the kidneys, more testing would probably be done before doing a dental. And if platelets are low, it's important to figure out why so it can be fixed and extractions would be safer, etc., etc., etc.
