| Bad gas, I mean really bad... This post actually pertains to my Yorkie-poo Penelope Uma. She has an insane amount of allergies and can only eat 2 dry dog foods that are sold in the US. One is the Science Diet Prescription food, which she ate for years until I got annoyed with having to have special permission to buy the stupid food, and Pinnacle Sweet Potato and Trout. So she currently eats Pinnacle Sweet Potato and Trout. I think it's also necessary to note that she had the same bad gas even eating the science diet food. The Pinnacle brand dog food is an organic and very good dog food, and I can't change it even if I wanted to, which I don't, and I don't believe it would help. She has had bad gas since she was a puppy, for her first years she ate Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier food, she had bad gas then too. I mean she probably passes really bad gas anywhere from 10-30+ times an hour at some points... I am wondering besides the "change her diet" or "feed her at certain times, certain amounts, let her outside a lot" idea's which I have already taken care of. Does anyone else have any idea's or medicines or treatments or anything that worked for them that could perhaps work for her? If so PLEASE let me know! Thanks everyone!!! |

| Have you tried using probiotics in her food? May help... Also, has her stool been checked for any parasites or bacteria?

| My little one, Ashley, had gas pockets in her abdomen caused by taking in too much air because of a collapsing trachea. The gas generally was not smelly, but it was painful for Ashley. I had to treat her medically for it, and she was under the care of her vet. I would take Penelope to the vet to find out if something else is causing it. Probiotics sound like a good idea. Ashley was almost seventeen, and she needed to take several medications. The vet recommended that I give her 1/4 of a gas-x tablet also, which seemed to help. I gave her the equivalent amount of baby gas-x, since the liquid was easier to give Ashley. I hope you find out what it is causing the gas and that it isn't causing Penelope pain. |

| She should be seen by a vet. Likely they will recommend trying a diet change before medications though and that is not something you are willing to do. You say she has always had this problem but none of the foods she has eaten are high quality (RC, SD, and Pinnacle). If it were me I would have a canine nutritionist come up with a suitable diet for her medical needs and homecook for awhile to see if that made a difference.

| All good recommendations. vet check stool for parasites - pro/prebiotic - talk to a vet nutritionist - talk to vet about a possible cause besides diet since it happened on 3 different foods, there could be something else going on there since that's excessive. Alice had gas for a while (not nearly that much though) and a change in diet (from Orijen to Nature's Variety) took care of it completely. I know you don't want to change the food, but I'd see what a vet has to say *besides an rx diet, unless of course something more serious is going on. Hopefully just adding a probiotic will help, it still sounds very excessive to me though.

| Nature's Variety has just come out with a new limited ingredient formula for dogs with allergies. That might be worth a try. My two do really well on that brand. I also think it's crazy to have to get a script to feed the Science Diet, I would be annoyed with that, too.

| Ya she is allergic to most of the ingredients in even the allergy dog foods. So shes just a hard one to feed. Pinnacle is actually a "high quality" organic dog food, she has also been fed numerous other "high quality" organic foods in the past which didn't help the gas. Since switching her from Royal Canin that she ate as a puppy almost 10 years ago, she has only been fed organic and high quality dog food. She is allergic to white potato's, brown rice, carrots, eggs, chicken, barley, and many other ingredients which are in pretty much every dog food, most other foods she cant eat. Not trying to be snappy or rude at all, so please don't take it that way, I just find it rather insulting when someone tries to tell me the dog food I am feeding or have fed her for 7 out of the 9 years of her life isn't "high quality" when it is, I have done an intense amount of research on the topic of dog food and am incredibly informed. I understand the importance of high quality dog food, thus why I have done research to make sure that I feed her the best possible option. Also she has been to the vet many times in her life and been tested for everything, going as far as having her blood evaluated for certain things, and x-rays galore. Her allergy test alone was intensive, her blood was drawn and sent away to a specific canine allergy institute to be evaluated. She has seen 4 incredibly good vets all over the country, the conclusion has always been she has so many allergies she is probably a bit more gassy b/c she has a harder time disgusting a lot of ingredients even in the 2 dry dog foods that she's ok to eat. She doesn't have bacteria or parasites, worms or anything bigger going on w/ her, just the gas. She is also not in pain, actually I don't even think she knows that shes tooting. I mean it's mostly just a concern for me b/c it smells incredibly bad. If there is a quick fix great, or something that has worked for your dog in the past wonderful please tell me, however it can't be cured by changing the diet, and she has no other health concerns. She isn't a purebred yorkie, and I say this b/c I have one and she has a whole other batch of health concerns, but Penelope is half yorkie half miniature poodle, and weighs like 17lbs, so she isn't a overly tiny dog so some concerns that I have w/ my Yorkie dont' really apply to Penelope. Thanks again for your help, I don't at all mean to be rude or snappy, however I am an incredibly informed dog owner that was just looking for some tips from other ppl if they have had a similar problem that wasn't cured by a change in diet. |

| One of my yorkies, Kiwi, was highly allergic, and she had environmental allergies, as well. I know how difficult it is with allergies. I don't know if there is anything in Gas-X that Penelope would be allergic to. I gave her the baby gas-x because she had too many other pills to take, but the 1/4 tablet of the adult pill was prescribed for Ashley, and she was four pounds. She was a very active little girl at almost seventeen, and the vet said it wouldn't harm her. As long as you aren't worried about her being allergic to it, it is the same thing they give to colicky babies. I wonder if gripe water could help her. I didn't try it because I would have needed to check with our vet to make sure it didn't interact with Ashley's other medications. I hope you are able to find something to help Penelope. http://www.colicshop.com/colic-calm-...pe-water.shtml |

| You can try adding a little ACV or some digestive enzymes to her food as well. ACV aids in digestion and digestive enzymes are good for dogs & people suffering from all kinds of allergies. |

| That is what I was thinking. Maybe a good digestive enzyme might help. They have ones for dogs...a know people you use PROZYME successfully....my schnauzer is on a human version (Pancreatic plus enzyme) that her vet suggested...she is 14lbs and takes one capsule per day with her breakfast. I have noticed that if I forget it, she is gassy, and she isn't as a general rule. |

| Oops, I meant digestive enzyme (that's the one you'll have to look into it's "source") at the end there, not probiotic, they're a little bit different when talking about a suppliment. There are actually some products that contain both "enzymes" and pro/prebiotics, but they both do pretty much the same thing as far as I know.
