Senior Yorkie Talker | Diarrhea day after spay surgery Princess Chloe got spayed yesterday 2/28 and had three teeth remove and microchiped. Today 3/1 at 8 am I gave her pain medication (Tramadol)which she was sent home with along with a little baby food she didn't like it and only took two licks of the mixture, and by 9:30am she had diarrhea. We when back to the Vet. today 3/1, and she gave me an antibiotic (Flagyl aslo known as Metronidazol) which would help with her diarrhea. I am giving her boiled chicken breast pieces with rice now which she ate a little but still has diarrhea. I was wondering if anyone has gone thru this situation and what step did they take as to any other food to give Princess Chloe during this diarrhea episode? Many thanks! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | She probably just has an upset tummy from the anesthesia and what not. Try giving her some plain low fat yogurt to help get the good bacteria back into her system. Also, I usually give the metronidazole first then wait a few minutes before feeding. Morgan just had a mild case of pancreatitis and is on metronidazole as well. She is also eating prescription i'd. I give her the metro, wait 10-15 minutes then feed her. The first day I fed her then gave her the meds and she thew up shortly after. Continue the metro and bland diet for a few days, also add the yogurt and she should be feeling better soon

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | It's pretty common to have either diarrhea or constipation after a spay. The intestines get a little touchy after being manipulated during a procedure. Since you've already been to the vet, just keep following what they told you. It can sometimes take a couple of doses of Metronidazol before you see an effect. The best thing to do in conjunction with the medication is to feed small, frequent meals so that the intestines aren't overwhelmed and start "dumping" their contents. Some people have had success with canned plain pumpkin (not the pie filling type). You can find that in the baking aisle at most grocery stores. A couple of teaspoons helps build up some bulk.

Senior Yorkie Talker | Diarrhea day after spay surgery Thank you so much for your replies, I got the plain low fat yogurt and she seems to like it. I'm feeding her the chicken and rice by hand cause she doesn't really want to eat, so I give her just a little every three hours. I'll see how she goes, and keep the pumpkin in mind to try if she still has loose stool. You are all so wonderful, thank you again for your advise! |
