We had a recent flea issue after boarding our dogs at a kennel (don't even get me started on them) and at the present moment seem to have things pretty much under control. We haven't found any in our home and we bathed the dogs and killed the ones on them and have continued to monitor them for signs of any others. Also as a preventative measure we bathed them again recently just to make sure they were good.

I want to get them some Frontline or something to keep them 100% flea free until the Winter sets in and the cold kills any that could be outside or if we missed any that could be lurking in our carpet. My fear though with that stuff is that even though the smallest dose is designed for dogs up to 22 pounds, that it may still be too strong for my little guys (they range from 4 to 9 pounds in size). I read somewhere that for small breed dogs people have used the cat version of Frontline on them as it is designed for cats in the same weight range as my Yorkies. Has anyone tried this or does anyone have any other suggestions to help prevent them in the future? Thanks!

You can split the dose. Not recommended by the company and there is no guarantee that the product will work, but it won't hurt them either.

You can also buy the Frontline Spray which is dosed differently, but I this probably would be Frontline alone (not Frontline Plus), so it would kill the adults, but not the eggs.

What did you use to bathe them?

You can also use K9 Advantix. It is for dogs under 10 pounds. It is the green pack. I found that it works better for Rosie than Frontline.

The breeder we got one of our males from suggested we use the original blue Dawn dish soap and lather them up and let it sit a few minutes before rinsing them. It does the same job as a flea dip would and is much safer for the dogs. It seemed to have done the trick for the most part.

i always use frontline on my kids, there is one for very small dogs- the vets office is the only place allowed to sell it here though for some reason... even with it however, i've always been told only to use 1/2 a pipette on bambi because of her size (3lbs) but for the rest 5lbs+ a full dose is perfect...
another thing i use on occasion is tea tree and neem oil... both are great for killing and keeping away fleas (and ticks) and are very pet safe- i have used the nemm oil on a 4 week puppy before under instruction from the vet (although this was 9 years ago when we 1st got kandi the corgi)
the neem oil can also be used on floors and I THINK on carpets too...

I use advantage and it goes by weight. Advantage is the only flea preventative I feel comfortable using

The fleas are bad in Michigan this year. I saw my first flea (ever) 2 weeks ago. Called the vet, and they gave me Comfortis. The small dose is for 2-10lbs I believe. It worked great, no fleas since.

I do not use chemicals on the girls...My Mom called a Holistic Vet and this is what he told her to do

1 cup of water
15 (I use 20) drops of peppermint oil, bought from natural food store
put it in a spray bottle...DO NOT spray directly on the dog!
dampen a paper towel or cloth...rub all over the dog, starting under the neck, under arms(legs) belly and on the back.
Hubby and I camp and take the girls with us...they are out side in their pen all day and have never had a flea on them....good luck!

Does it work for ticks also? Or just fleas?
