vaccination schedule

my yorkie, kenji, received his 1st annual booster for parvo when he turned one. he's now 2 years old. the other day, i got a reminder from my vet to have him come back in for his parvo booster.

i thought that once your dog receives his 1st annual booster for parvo, then they don't need any additional boosters. this is according to dr. jean dodd's vaccination schedule that i found on this site.

can anyone offer any insight?

There are hundreds of protocols to choose from. Some are very close to each other. Dogs do not need annual boosters, but some vets don't stop them for whatever reason (revenue, concerns over the research done, etc.). It's really something that you and the vet have to come to an agreement on because they can refuse to hospitalize your Yorkie if you don't follow their protocol. If they won't alter the schedule, then there are plenty of other vets who will. Most are stiill going to be uncomfortable with no vaccines after the one year booster though. They will sooner go for the AAHA protocol (one year booster and then every three years).

wow, i'll have to check with them on that. i know there are so many opinions on this subject. i just don't want to over vaccinate my dog if he doesn't need it. thanks, ellie may.

Jackson got all his puppy shots (3 sets-8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks, then rabies) and then at a little over 1yr old, he got the DHPP booster, a week later he got rabies booster. My vet informed me that those were all good for the next 3yrs. Now, whether or not I vaccinate again in 3yrs... I guess I will decide then. Legally, you've gotta do rabies every 3yrs here, so I can't get out of that one. But the every year stuff just blows my mind. It just seems wayyy excessive in my non professional opinion!
