So DInky has one undescended testicle. We knew this, and having no intention to breed did not worry about it. So I understand that his neutering is more complicated. But my questions is, why not just leave it? He will have to stay at the vet overnight for the complicated surgery.

you can leave it till he is about 5 years old with little or no problems...but from my understanding...after 5 years...his chances of cancer rise....good luck

The chances of testicular cancer are quite a bit higher with an undescended testical. It is highly recommend that these pups are neutered. Some vets require that they stay overnight and some don't. It shouldn't be anymore complicated than a spay. You can always have it done somewhere else or maybe sign a waiver to bring him home early.

That was my understanding also. Since the testicle isn't in plain view, a vet has to got get them per say, much like a spay. I have seen some vets require overnights even on simple neuters. I was able to pick my boy up the same day. It was hard enough to have to leave him before 7 am and wait until 4 pm to pick him up. Even if he was a nightmare once the anesthesia wore off.

Micah had a undescended testicle he was neutered at UT while there being tested for LS he acted as though nothing ever happened and now he thinks
that he is a stud

Yes it should be removed and its usually no more complicated then a spay. sometimes the testicle is close by so they don't even have to make a second incision, but sometimes its hiding so they need to make another incision to search for it. however since these guys are tiny its usually not that hard to find. some of the vets i worked for said they thought small dog spay/neuters were easier because everything was right there and they didn't have to dig around. personally i don't think an over night stay is necessary and i would want to take him home. usually nobody is there at the hospital to monitor the patients in a general practice so i don't see the point.

also i do not agree with being able to let it go until 5 years of age. i've seen tumors form and wrap around organs because of an undescended testicle at a younger age. it may not be cancer but it still can cause a huge problem. if it grows and wraps around other organs it can cut off important blood supply to them and the organs/tissues can die.

Best to do the neuter before a year old just to be safe. I'd still do it at 6 months old like i would any other neuter.

Dinky will be a full 5 months on the 12th of July. We are thinking of having the surgery right at 6 months. We will be doing the neutering for sure. Perhaps I can get the surgery done early in the morning and pick him up at the end of the day.
We've only had him for about 10 days, and he is making great progress. He was so timid at first that we were worried he was going to be too shy to be happy. Then of course, there have been the typical Yorkie potty issues. But Dinky has gone one whole day and night without peeing in his crate!
I just have to blather on about my dog. We had a yellow lab years ago and loved him to pieces. We never had a Yorkie before, and I am head over heels about this little guy!

Calvin will be five months old tomorrow and his one testicle just descended low enough so that it wont be a problem neutering home. Its not completely in its place but the vet said that they wont have to open him up. Maybe by the time he is six months it will be down completely. Im just glad that its a point where they can get to it.

My Wally had an undecended testicle also. He was neutered at 6mo and there were no problems at all.

My dog was also bilaterally cryptorchid he had a hernia repair when he was a puppy the vet was unable to fix him at that time, they desended one at a time within a week or so just before he was 6 months old and his surgery went just fine, so still hope for your dog that they may desend by the time you take him for his surgery on their own. hope all goes well and enjoy your new dog yorkies are great animals, as the house training be patient reward good behavior, i dont know about any dogs but mine i never had any dogs beside the 2 yorkies i had, but it took a longer time for my one dog than the other, my one dog can hold it for a lng time the other one could not.
